Activists spurred by affirmative action ruling challenge legacy admissions at Harvard

WASHINGTON (AP) — A civil rights group is challenging legacy admissions at Harvard University, saying the practice discriminates against students of color by giving an unfair boost to the mostly white children of alumni.

It’s the latest effort in a growing push against legacy admissions, the practice of giving admissions priority to the children of alumni. Backlash against the practice has been building in the wake of last week’s Supreme Court’s decision ending affirmative action in college admissions.

Lawyers for Civil Rights, a nonprofit based in Boston, filed the civil rights complaint Monday on behalf of Black and Latino community groups in New England, alleging that Harvard’s admissions system violates the Civil Rights Act.

    Just kidding.

But heck, since legacy candidates get more preferential treatment than would be minority students.........fair is fair, right? I wonder if the conservative activist who launched 18 objections across the country to AA saw this coming? In a perfect world his kid (I have no idea if he has any) will be denied admission to a college he/she would ordinarily have received because of legacy status.........in favor of a black student. Now that would be kismet.

Son of a gun! You're the ONLY person to bring up legacy admissions after this new AA verdict. Maybe they are really listening to you! Good job getting the message across. I hope this goes on the SC chopping block next. Its just as bad as AA.

How would it be in favor of a black student? Wouldn't the elimination of a legacy applicant open to door to the next qualified applicant regardless of color?
