SO PUMPED!!! One of the best cinematics I have ever seen. Wish Blizzard would make a movie already lol.

Anyone else here a fan/player of Starcraft or other RTS's? I love SC, Age of Empires, and the Total War Series.

    I agree that looks fantastic.

Blizzard has some extremely marketable properties. I wonder why they have not tried to go the movie route?

Making a movie with animation that good would be an enormous undertaking. It likely took their studio months to make that 3 minute clip. A full length film would probably cost in excess of 200 million dollars, require them to more than triple their staff, and it would probably take 2 years at least to make. However, Avatar was like that too, and look at the returns it made...

They have said they would love to see a starcraft or World of Warcraft movie made, but its not really a priority for them at the moment. However, I remember a post from them on the subject last year said that if an accomplished sci-fi director contacted them (they specifically mentioned James Cameron) about doing one, they would start working on it the next day.

I dunno. Dead Space has two movies on Netflix. They can't have been that expensive.

Age of Empires, Total War, I love these series. Will certainly be interseting to see how this plays out.

Thats because they didn't have animation this good. If Blizzard is going to make a SC movie, they are probably going to try to pull out all the stops and make it a theater release.

Love the total war series...Been thinking about getting SC II I have the first one but got my ass kicked regularly online. To this day I cannot stop the zerg rush!

The video looks kick ass though!

Remember the Final Fantasy movie? It was a giant bomb and cost Squaresoft (now Square-enix) over 80 million dollars in losses. They have to do it right.

I have yet to play StarCraft I: Wings of Liberty. Is it like the first one? Typical RTS with base building defending and attacking? How unstoppable is the zerg rush? And do the Protoss still have those annoying battleships with the interceptors?

The cinematics in Wings of Liberty were half the fun of playing the campaign. I am really looking forward to the story continuing and more Blizzard animation.

I've been disappointed with Blizzard over the last year or two over the way they are handling all their games, so they could potentially redeem themselves in my very important eyes by making Heart a worthy 2nd installment.

The Final Fantasy movie was made 10 years ago and had a lot of issues that probably wouldn't be made now (hopefully). The story was pretty shoddy, and the animation, while good for the time, still looked a bit half baked for the realism it was trying to convey. Only Pixar had really mastered animation at that time, and Pixar has never tried to really go for "realism" with their animation, istead going for unique, sometimes simple styles that will make the movie timeless.

I would say the story isn't as good as the first starcraft. If a continuation from the first one, but since there was such a gap between releases, there was some definite character changes (Raynor isn't nearly as crazy about killing Kerrigan for instance). However the graphics are very solid, a major step up from the original, and the game play is as tight as ever. Extremely well balanced really until you get up into the ridiculously high level competition ladders (zerg tend to dominate a bit there). Its got the standard RTS gameplay. Build up economy, build up defenses, build up army, deal with mission objectives, etc... and each level is unique and well designed. The enemy AI is also way better this time around.

In normal PVP zerg rushes arn't to much to worry about. Early ones can be very risky as in, if they fail, the zerg player will be significantly behind. End game zerg rushes typically are what happen, and consist of massive zerg forces. However, late game Terran and Protos defensive technology can typically counter these very well and dish out a lot of pain themselves.

I would suggest looking at some gameplay videos on youtube if you are interested in buying but are not sure.

Montoya, do you like RTS multiplayer or do you stick to the campaigns? Battlenet has changed quite a bit since the first one(can't even remember if the first one used battlenet or not). My skills placed me solidly in silver league, but I really enjoy the multiplayer. Single player has quite a few options too, from the campaign, to custom battles, to special scenarios with unique circumstances to complete the missions.

Not sure what WoL is priced at now. When I bought it, it was $60 new and even before heading into the multiplayer I felt my money had been well spent.

There is also a very active mod scene in the custom made maps area.

SC2 is worth it just to get in a Thor and stomp around kicking ass.

This is good news, but I wouldn't get to exited just yet. Not till they start filming. A WoW movie has been in development hell for years, and for the longest time (which the article touched on), Sam Raimi was supposed to direct it. But a few months ago he completely dropped it in favor of doing some stupid Wizard of Oz prequal.

The supposed script was written years ago, so I imagine one of the first things they will be doing is essentially throwing it out and writing a new one. A lot of lore has changed in the WoW universe since then, and they won't want the movies story to be "out of date" when it comes out.
Hopefully they have a lot of good casting choices. Seeing as the budget will likely be north of 100 mil, they can probably afford some major stars that will bring in some unlikely fans and widen the audience without cheapening the story too much.
I think 2015 is both a good and bad year for it.
since the last Hobbit movie is due out in 2014, and there doesn't seem to be any hints of any other big budget and name fantasy movies following it aside from this one, and fantasy fans will be very hungry for more. This will probably be able to ride on the coat tails well. the CGI it uses will also probably be fantastic because of the advances that have been made in the last couple years, and will be made in the close future that this film will benifit heavily from.

The negatives that 2015 will carry is that there is a decent chance WoW's popularity will have waned to the point where a movie won't had as strong and reliable a core audience as it would have now. WoW reached its peak at the end of WotLK 3 or so years ago with 12,000,000 subs. Cataclysm was really bad, and quit a few people left the game though, and subs dipped down to 9.3 million. Their back up to around 10 million now. But its doubtful the game will ever achieve that 12 million mark again. In the next 3 years WoW will pass its tenth birthday. Blizzards rumored next generation MMO (currently codenamed "Titan") will likely debut, which will leach fans and subs away, and its likely there will be several million less playing then than today (probably still north of 5 million, but nowhere near the 10 million it currently is).
Thats a big loss in probable ticket sales.

Regardless, I am glad they didn't get Uwe Bowl to direct it.
