The famous scientist Stephen Hawking is dealing with the fallout after making a racist comment. "Black holes are not called Black because they are black, but because they so rudely steal everything in sight." Hawking insists he was not trying to be racist when he made the comment. Obama paid Hawking a personal visit to discuss the comments:
I was really impressed with "The Anthropic Principle" in "Stephen Hawking's Universe" but...... his explanation for the Cyclic Model left me wondering if Dr. Hawking was a closet Theist...... who lied and stated that he was an atheist...... due to the social pressure for all really really really smart people to say that they are atheist or agnostic. The method he uses involves selecting from a rather large vocabulary. It would appear that an experienced user could speak nearly as fast as anyone. OTOH it doesn't look exactly easy, and could easily allow Hawking to say things by mistake, IMO. I very much admire Hawking. He has not allowed his handicap to limit him to fields where allowances must be made for his disability but has, by his own admission, used it to make real contributions to human achievement.
