Steve Scalise selected as GOP nominee for speaker
Story by Cami Mondeaux, Rachel Schilke, Reese Gorman • 4h

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise will be the Republican nominee for speaker, defeating Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) in a simple majority vote in a closed-door meeting on Wednesday.

Looks like Steve Scalise is going to be the next Speaker of the House as Jim Jordan has stated he will support Scalise.

Hopefully this will be over tomorrow.

Awesome. Either Jordan or Scalise would have been great choices.

Jordan was my first choice but Scalise was probably the better pick.

Either govt will grind to a halt or he’ll be hated in a couple months. Only options with this caucus.

They had a vote where Scalise received “majority vote” in a secret election…

He needs 217 votes and they only have 222, several members have said they will not vote for him and the 8 magats probably will not either.

I doubt this will be over tomorrow unless some major concessions are made.

While republicans are at it — why don’t y’all demand your party fill the massive military leadership y’all have created? It’s not like WW3 is about to start or anything — no rush.

I agree, from what we saw last time with McCarthy, doesn't seem like the first go round will produce a speaker. It may be far fewer than McCarthy, but unless there is a sea change, it will take at least a day or two.

One thing is for certain, if Scalise doesn't get the vote in the first round, it will be the Dems' fault In Trumper world. EVERYTHING is ALWAYS the Dems' fault in Trumper world.

Do you think it will end before the 15th ballot?

Jordan would have been a disaster. He is neither trustworthy nor competent. You are correct that Scalise is the better choice. I just hope he can get the votes.

They’re to busy trying to get all 222 clowns in a Volkswagen Beatle to elect a Speaker.

I’ll bet Scalise feels like the dog that caught the car.

One member said Scalise only got like 110 votes….doesn’t bode well for this being a quick process.

Scalise has blood cancer. He should have disqualified himself, but ego comes before the welfare of the country.

I am tired of this. Trump, Biden and McConnell are old and showing their age. Yet they insist upon continuing. I sick of the nursing home Congress and Whitehouse.

It was 113 to 99 in the GOP caucus secret ballot. Most of the 99 will vote for Scalise in the Speaker vote. But a handful still will not and that will be more than 5. MTG has already indicated she will not vote for Scalise as speaker publicly and i bet the nihilist gang of 8 won't be. either

No leadership at all. Just fighting among themselves, one faction vs. another faction.

Well, that is what the GOP hopes will happen. Mind you to achieve that you might have to gag and tie a few freedom caucus members

Scalise is probably thinking, “whew, dodged that bullet!”

Why any tRumpublican would want to be Speaker is a wonder. It’s been the kiss of death for every one of them that’s tried it, in recent memory anyway.

The truth is the Republican Party has the majority in name only. There are a few actual Republicans, there’s mostly MAGrateA’s and, the Freedumb Caucus. That those fractious factions are calling themselves a party is a lie so they can hold power. They’ve got it but don’t know what to do with it.

And they sure as hell can’t get along much less come to a consensus. Calling themselves a party is a TRAITOR tRump scale fraud.

Should the dems chime in and say essentially: if you nominate a moderate republican, we will vote for him so that congress can continue operating during these difficult times? Even going so far as to say, we don't require any horse trading for our vote?
of course, with today's Republican Party, any republican seen saying so much as a hello to dem will be branded as a rino traitor. so it seems improbable. I guess the dems need to just continue sitting this one out and watch the circular firing squad continue doing it's thing.

You are asking for our country’s two party of the worst humans to do what they are elected to do?

They don't have the leadership to unite them all. The whip seems powerless too. The only one at this point is Trump, who at the same time is a liability.

They put themselves in this situation by allowing anyone that could get an easy election, and build up their ranks, but too many loose cannons came with it.
