Actually both are protected speech under the first amendment; they cannot be criminaly prosecuted for their actions; however the school would have the right to discipline them under its policies whether they were chanting USA or Viva Mexico since it appears that they were at a school event.

The Article doesn't get into the depth of the story.

    Screw you.

Some Shakespeare might help you out a little in understanding:

Abraham: Do you bite your thumb at us, sir?
Sampson: I do bite my thumb, sir.
Abraham: Do you bite your thumb at us, sir?
Sampson (to Gregory): Is the law of our side if I say ay?
    Gregory: No.
Sampson: No, sir, I do not bite my thumb at you sir; but I bite my thumb, sir.
    Gregory: Do you quarrel, sir?
    Abraham: Quarrel, sir? No, sir.
Sampson: If you do, sir, I am for you: I serve as good a man as you.
    Abraham: No better.
    Sampson: Well, sir.
Gregory: (to Sampson) Say 'better'; here comes one of my master's kinsmen.
    Sampson: Yes, better, sir.
    Abraham: You lie.
Sampson: Draw, if you be men! Gregory, remember thy swashing blow.

I think the school over reacted in a big way and this is a trend that will continue in america.

Chanting "Mexico" would have been fine. This is Alta California after all.

Its radical leftists illegal alien infested commiefornia, what else do you expect. Do a search and you can watch latinos and native americans spray painting and walking all over a US flag in AZ but no government employee or law enforcement tool bags do anything about it. They stand around and watch.

America is deceased, it has become the story you tell your kids at bed time.

See, son, there once was this amazing country that was founded by courageous men, they fought a bloody battle against some tyrants so they could break free from restrictions and unjust practices. They formed a new government with ideologies brought to paper and sworn upon that gave the citizens rights and freedoms no other nations citizens had.

This nation prospered and grew, everyone wanted a chance to experience the opportunities that this nation provided. Freedom to practice religion, freedom to move throughout the country, to sell goods, claim land, grow a family. However, after a short 250 years the nation began to crumble due to traitors that infiltrated government and changed the nations laws, stripping away those rights and freedoms from the civilians right under their nose. They went from a superpower nation to a warmongering nation deeply divided and economically broken once the bankers were allowed to come over from europe and enslave the people with debt ridden interest backed fiat currency.

The nations manufacturing plants were shut down, one by one, jobs were outsourced to third world communist countries. Squatters were allowed by the government to invade the southern border and the politicians actually rewarded them for it in hopes of a vote. They waged many wars in the middle east, spread their military thin, borrowed lots of money from other nations, grew the welfare state beyond sustainability.....

-wait....dad, I know this story, we are learning about it in history class, you are talking about Rome.

No son, I am talking about the United States of America.

You'd think it didn't require explanation... but this is the internet.

    How about willfully ignorant?

Just amazed that folks are this dense.

Thinking adults will wonder why "USA" is the chosen chant at an event comprised entirely of Americans. If the intent is to inflame a people by suggesting they're here illegally (hence the USA chant) then there is a context that would justify the school admin's action.

According to what you said, to be exact " Thinking adults will wonder why "USA" is the chosen chant at an event comprised entirely of Americans" this was offensive. Right....

    This too.

There's that context thing again. Weren't they reacting to news that Bin Laden was killed? The other a tribute to 9/11 victims? Did any of those instances occur at this high school basketball game? Dense points going up.

Hey, Im just going off EXACTLY what you said. Maybe you should rethink what you say?

You dont think Americans from the middle east and arabs visiting our country were offended? Maybe they dont agree that Osama Bin laden was bad, why is it ok to offend them ? So once you go into a highschool, you are not allowed to chant your countries name?

Of course you are, and I get it. Context escapes you, so I'm sure it came naturally.

Yes. Perhaps I should explain things in a coloring book.

Why would they be? They're Americans... muslims were killed in the towers as well. Why would you automatically assume otherwise?

Thats odd, why do you assume this for a highschool basketball game? Mexicans are still americans. Why would you automatically assume otherwise?

Well if you feel that away about middle eastern people, Im sure that you feel the same way about mexicans being americans too. What is your opinion on the school admin`s call? Do you think he had a valid point about the chant being offensive? After all, Mexicans are Americans too just like the middle eastern people we discussed.

It's sad you see it that way. Or do you live in an enclave? I grew up here and lived in Southern and Northern California with whites and latinos and blacks in the same neighborhoods, even a Jewish kid. Never had any racial problems.

You're not getting it. In this context, it doesn't matter if they're Americans. Associating Hispanic Americans with illegals is a common inflammatory act. It's a play on a stereotype, just like a circulated e-mail of watermelons on the White House lawn. If you're willing to ignore context, things like this will continue to seem normal to you...

Yes, taunting is exactly what it is. I suppose taunting is a family value among nationalists who fear, for some reason that completely escapes me, that "their' country is being taken away from them. It's all about ownership with them. If this were a football game, those kids would be levelled with a fifteen-yard penalty to be assessed on the subsequent kickoff.

My county was white for the most part until the eighties. The latin population didn't really take off until after the Reagan Amnesty. The migration continued through the nineties until we have about something on an unimaginable order of magnitude. It's come to the point where I can distinguish who is a recent arrival, who has been here a couple of years and who has been here for about ten years. It's also easy to distinguish illegals from legals.

I can distinguish illegals and legals from each other. It's not hard. It simply requires paying attention to their appearance, clothing, and where they fall on the Spanish-Spanglish-English continuum.

The 70s through the present. I've lived in working-class neighborhoods, don't remember a single racial incident, other than a few epithets here and there, but no violence that was race-based. Of course, I've never lived in the intercity (other than Inglewood when I was a toddler). Blacks were effectively ghetto-ized in those areas by racial restrictions that weren't overturned until 1949.

For what it's worth it seems that Dr. Gabe Soumakian, the man behind the Gestapo tactics, is an Armenian. He's involved in the Armenian National Committee of America http://www.anca.org/press_releases/press_releases.php?prid=1189.

Just saying that might explain his desire to squelch pro-American jingoism in school. It's unclear if he's a native born citizen or an immigrant. He's been in the school system for over 25 years. http://www.ouhsd.k12.ca.us/news/ind...sd-hires-dr-gabe-soumakian-as-superintendent/
