And when you register your gun you'll still be law abiding.

And the felons who don't will continue to be unlawful, and they can't even be arrested for not registering a gun.

If a government were to confiscate firearms, why would it NOT use its registration list as a means to do so?

Trump won't be in office long enough to take our guns.

But, instances where registration lists have been used to confiscate guns has occurred not only in other countries, but here. It doesn’t take much Googling to find those instances nor to find those on the left that have advocated doing just that.
Further, various lists of gun owners have been used to politically target them, such as in NY.
    https://gawker.com/5974190/here-is-a-list-of-all-the-*******s-who-own-guns-in-new-york-city
It’s not just that registration list would be used for an confiscation attempt, but as in this instance, politically weaponized to intimidate likely voters opposed to the Left’s agenda.
It is among the reasons that the current federal laws prescribing background checks by FFL prohibit establishing an electronic registry.
While I work frequently for an FFL, giving me access to the NICS if I sell a gun privately, I, like many here, have suggested allowing any private citizen to use the NICS if doing a private transfer, but every time it is suggested, antis object using spurious reasoning, hiding their true objective of pushing for a national registry.
Senator Tom Coburn proposed a universal background check with a ‘do it youself’ System. It was opposed by many conservatives for obvious reasons and by liberals for spurious objections largely because it ultimately doesn’t set up a national registry.

The ‘the government won’t come for your guns’ empty promises of the left if a national registry is established is just that, a deliberately empty promise as demonstrated both by instances where registries have been used for confiscation and statements by liberal candidates advocating for it.
Aside from using a registry for its potential for gun confiscation is the more ominous potential for its use if weaponized to intimidate gunnowning voters.

And if you do not you will become a criminal. That is the purpose of the proposed law. To eventually disarm or criminalize political opposition.

    It has no other objective.

Never mind the fact there's no sound argument that the state needs to know the owner of each of the >350,000,000 gun in the US.

As long as files and dremel tools are still legal to own in the US, registration has not other purpose than to enable confiscation.

If your car has to have a tag on the back, why shouldn't you have a visible tag if you're walking around with a gun?

Tag gun carriers. Make them buy concealed carry insurance.

I have heard this many times, but even an dremelled and obliterated serial number can be recovered with xrays that show the density signature difference in the metal resulting from stamping of the serial number. I have see it done and had such a recovery done with an old early iron frame Henry I was trying trace.

    Sometimes.
If, say, I dremel all the way through my AR15 mag wells, there's no possibility of recovery.

Sure, if you completely drill through the substrate, you can eliminate the serial number. Some guns may not be structurally compromised, others, maybe. But, given all the guns in the wild unregistered, why the bother?
You could of course make your own. I have cached, in Ireland, a couple guns with no serial numbers...I made them decades ago and cached them before leaving.

Just making it clear that it is indeed sometimes possible to obliterate a S/N to the pont where it cannot ever be reconstructed.

Because the registration of motor vehicles pertains to purposes of taxation, not anything else. Motor vehicles are not registered in the name of safety.

Because motor vehicles are neither recognized, nor protected, by the united states constitution. Firearms, however, are.

Insurance companies have already gone on record as explaining why such is not only unfeasible, but also a bad idea. Insurance will not pay for claims resulting from criminal actions and activities, such as the negligent and/or deliberate discharge of a firearm, thus making the insurance useless.

Except as a means to make it more difficult for the law abiding to exercise their rights - which is the entire point.
