Subatomic particles- neutrinos cannot move faster than light, , according to a new report..

Looks like our experts are ,as usual , not in total agreement. Results of earlier tests are still in dispute ..

    Faster-than-light neutrino result queried

The findings challenge a result reported in September that, if true, would undermine a century of physics.

The team at the INFN-Gran Sasso laboratory in Italy said they had measured faster-than-light speeds in neutrinos sent from Cern, 730km away.

Now a different team at the same lab reports findings that, they say, cast doubt on that surprising result.

I read in the Metro last week that particles had again achieved speeds greater than the speed of light.

    So what's really going on..

Welcome to a month ago. If neutrinos could travel faster than light, then why did the neutrinos from SN1987A arrive at the same time the light did and not four years earlier?

We are working on the order of .002%. More than likely systemic error.

No, they experts who had the "faster" than light ones said that they know that they're wrong but don't know why they're wrong.

I find this debate interesting. I'm not able to follow it technically, but I kinda hope Einstein was wrong just cause it would be cool!

I do as well. The consequences on the understanding of all theories related to space and, in part, quantum physics developed in the last 80 years would have to be reviewed.

Why are you so concerned with special and general relativity? They are not affected by a subatomic particle traveling at >c speeds because they only rely on a space-time structural speed limit. QED would take the hit, not SR or GR.

We have speculated about a subatomic particle that can travel faster than light for the last fifty years or so. It is called the Tachyon and its possible existence has been accounted for in most modern theories.

A few weeks ago - I placed one of our garden snails next to a frog , both went in opposite directions - I could'nt find any "neutrinos" . Does that prove Einstein's theory ? (wink )

However, read my siggy below re facts + theories .

An observation of a tachyon has never been repeated until possibly now and is purely something that comes out by playing with the maths. If they exist then it has huge implications on our understanding of physics. All our descriptions of particles (as far as I am aware) use the speed of light as a constant and is assumed to be the fastest a particle can travel. They also violate causality if the principles of Special Relativity is assumed true.

Those neutrinos were just messing with you, whizzing through all the empty space in your head and gone quicker than in a flash!

This is certainly exciting to watch! Just a few days ago I read this:

    2nd test affirms faster-than-light particles

It still baffles me that the speed of light can remain constant no matter how fast you're moving.

Not can but has to travel faster than light which really is the snag because that kind've puts it out of reach and out of the very concept of what a particle is.

Nothing in science is ever "settled" - at least until a current "theory" is overturned /disproved by another "theory", . unless you're amongst those who share the beliefs of America's Creationists/flat-earthers.
