It has been announced at the NATO summit in Vilnius that Turkiye will approve Sweden's membership of NATO. It isn't yet clear what deals have been done or arms twisted, but it looks like this is finally a done deal. Congratulations Sweden, congratulations NATO. Europe is that little bit safer & more secure.

    Next stop....Ukraine.

The law of unintended consequences has been having a day out recently. First fiercely independent Finland and now a nation that has been neutral since Napoleon was alive have joined NATO. There is NO WAY this would have happened without Putin invading Ukraine. I'm not sure who is the bigger moron, Putin or the people who defend him.

The Russian people have a reputation for believing whatever their government tells them to believe. There must be intelligent, perceptive people in Russia who know that the invasion of Ukraine has been a terrible mistake, and that Putin has been bad for Russia.

It really is funny to recall that before last year's invasion people, especially on the right, used to regularly praise Putin's genius and compare him favourably to 'weak' western leaders. In light of that it is amusing that it was two women who led Finland & Sweden into NATO.

Putin has wrecked his military, weakened his nation and strengthened his supposed enemies. This will go down as one of this biggest own goals since Francisco Solano Lopez thought 'hey, lets declare war on Argentina, Brazil & Uruguay all at one'. Stoopid!

...yeah...I means its kindda sad as well in that, for want of a better phrase, a country struggling to off-load it's communist past with all the graft and corruption and subjugation that was encapsulation as "the Soviet State" and then they let this guy take over and whole thing starts again only the Supreme Soviet is now a collection oligarchs....the Russian Mafia....like some obscene ouroboros.

The latest estimate's I've seen as that it will now take Russia 20-30 years to re-establish its military into a functioning force....lockdown really didn't do Putin any favours.....I bet the schmuck wishes he'd never sat down and penned that absurd essay

Closing the ring around Russia with additional NATO members is a major important step. Maintaining arms supplies to Ukraine is also of great importance. Sooner or later, those at the top of the Russian hierarchy who support President Vladimir Putin and have benefitted from his virtual dictatorship will see their best interests lie elsewhere. Time is on the side of NATO.

    Regards, stay safe 'n well.

I suspect many RuZZians are simply unaware of the events unfolding....considering much of their media is state run....and the sheeple are fed what Botox boy wants them to hear.

I believe part of this deal was for us to sale F-16’s to Turkey. I’m not so sure I like that being how Turkey has really been in many antagonistic arguments with other Allie’s.

More very bad news for the Putin regime:

"Without a doubt, Ukraine deserves to be in NATO,” Erdogan said.
Zelensky said he was “happy to hear” that Turkey supports Ukraine’s bid to join during a joint press conference."

Given his now expressed support for Ukraine's admission to NATO Erdogan may decide to share some of those F-16s with Ukraine.

Ukraine will have to wait until the war is over. I don't think there is any way any country can join while in state of war.

yeah...it's kindda hard to see isn't it....there was some talk of bastardising a sort of membership/co-operation agreement based on the lands it currently controls if/when a ceasefire occurs but....hey...who knows...?

I think the war will only end when Russian replace Putin. I don’t see Putin is going to negotiate with Ukraine and say “ lets take this Ukrainian city for us and we will leave rest of Ukraine”.

Sweden’s giant-killer military is built for one thing: fighting Russia
    Robert Clark
Tue, July 11, 2023 at 10:21 AM CDT

The accession of Sweden to Nato is a historic moment. Regardless of the closed-door discussions between Turkish president Recep Erdoğan, the European Union, and the United States which led to this moment, the end result is simple. Nato has received a massive military boost; Russia has found swathes of the Arctic and Baltic regions denied to it.

The British Armed Forces can sometimes seem to be caught in an identity crisis; unsure of the tilt to the Indo-Pacific, hedging against a continental hegemon, or whether they can remain a small elite force deployed in overseas interventions. Sweden has no such issue. Its military is built for one thing, and one thing only: fighting Russia.

As such, despite over 200 years of neutrality since a traumatic loss of territory during the Napoleonic wars, Sweden is a modern-day military powerhouse. Since the 2020 defence paper, Stockholm has sought to increase both the size of its military and its budget. Last year Sweden spent 1.3 per cent of GDP on defence, and it aims to meet the Nato 2 per cent target by 2026 at the latest. This money goes a long way; unlike the UK or France, Sweden has few global deployments and no nuclear arsenal to swallow up chunks of its defence budget. It is free to target spending on modernising its conventional forces.

    ... https://news.yahoo.com/sweden-giant-killer-military-built-152110001.html

I don't know how much Sweden and Finland have trained and prepared together to resist a ruscist imperial invasion, but I imagine they'll be doing a lot more of that now that they are both under the NATO banner, and of course the world's #1 military will benefit a lot as well.

Admiral James Stavridis, former Supreme Allied Commander Europe, often comes to MSNBC as guest. I have heard him say Finish and Swedish army are very skilled military and both countries have been doing military exercises with NATO force for years.

Sweden was worried about Turkey's reaction to anti-Quran demonstrations in the country because Sweden's NATO bid can be blocked by Turkey. Swedish police had to approve the anti-Quran demonstration due to court orders citing freedom of speech but the demonstrator was later arrested for inciting ethnic hatred. Turkey has also asked for a number of extraditions of terrorists Sweden is harboring to address its security concerns. Sweden just did what Turkey asked for.
