"All shops, markets, restaurants, bars, entertainment and leisure establishments such as museums, libraries, cinemas, concert halls, theatres, sports centres, swimming pools and ski areas are closed."
    .....
"Up to 8,000 soldiers in the Swiss army will be deployed to maintain order and assist in containment efforts..."

This for 2200 infected of a population of 8.5M, a doubling just over the weekend.

This stuck out to me simply because I don't often see much news coming out of Switzerland. Afaict, their historical international neutrality similarly reflects their lack of political bias (as a nation) and lends to a tendency of nonparticipation in global narratives. IOW- I don't think Switzerland would be making a political show of the pandemic. They seem legitimately concerned and determined to 'head this off at the pass.'

I really wish I knew how serious to take this. On one hand it seems a bit of an overreaction in that it's like a bad case of the flu. On the other hand, it's spreading and is close to where I am. One of my wife's patients has the virus and when she told me that it was a bit unnerving to be that close to it. The state has shut down the school system and banned gatherings of more than one hundred people It's like a post-apocalyptic silence outside. I'm not close to the highway, but we could always hear big trucks and motorcycles before. Now it's this eerie silence.

I'm thinking I might binge watch "The Walking Dead" and a bunch of other post apocalypse movies.

The Swiss have a badass military reserve system. This folks can react quickly!

I had a Swiss K31 Rifle for years, the one they issued their reservist, who kept their rifles at their house not in a armory. Beautiful rifle, built, well like a Swiss watch. :)

Well the idea this govt reaction is political is what fools believe.

And those that are certain this will be no worse than the flu or common cold in deaths may be bigger fools

Since this virus is spreading even in the southern hemisphere the idea our summer will kill it out is absurd .

Why cant it just kill out the ideological driven fools?

If you listen to the medical experts there is no doubt about how seriously to take this. This is not the time to play Holiday Inn medical expert or to listen to internet jockeys.

This is the day of reckoning for all the rw bs that has people so far out of touch with reality. And people are going to die because of that. As many as 40 million trump supporters have potentially ignored measures to reduce and help contain the spread, all because they are fed crap by trump and the rw media; and didn't believe it was real.

Considering that "ideological driven fools" is entirely subjective and ambiguous, killing all of the "ideological driven fools" could result in mass extinction. Perhaps the red-leaning coronas will target everyone left of center, the blue-leaning coronas will target everyone right of center, and then most of us will be dead. So, if a person would like to see all the "ideological driven fools" killed out, one will have to rigorously define what an "ideological driven fool" is. Care to give us a more rigorous definition of who you feel needs to be killed out?

Talking to folks here in my little town, none of them even know anyone who has it. All they have to go on is media reports. TBC- no one here is saying its 'fake news' (they might be thinking it, idk), but the 'cry wolf constantly' media has numbed a lot of folks, particularly 'rw's' to any worries of major upheaval or catastrophe.

That being said, the stores here are all out of toilet paper and dry goods, and everyone is going out of their way to avoid trips to urbania. So it isn't that folks aren't paying attention. I think they think this is a 'city problem' and we just have to wait for it to pass.

That'll likely change once folks start knowing someone who knows someone who has it. And to be fair, it pretty much had to get to that point in the high population density areas before they really started taking it seriously too.

FWIW, I ran the numbers of the Switzerland virus growth rates yesterday. They were at 858 reported infections 4 days ago. They are up over 2000 today. In the last 3 days they are at a daily growth rate of ~40%. Granted, I don't really trust these numbers as I've found countries reporting to be a bit erratic until they get over 1K infections. We will probably have a better understanding of where their real growth rate is by the end of the week.

However, if that trend continues (~40% increase of infections daily), they are looking at full population infection in 30 days. So, yeah, they need to get something done now before their hospitals are totally swamped.
