DUBAI (Reuters) - An al Qaeda-affiliated rebel commander in Syria has pledged to target communities of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's Alawite minority with rockets in revenge for an alleged chemical attack near Damascus, according to an audio recording seen on Sunday.

"For every chemical rocket that has fallen on our people in Damascus, one of their villages will, by the will of God, pay for it," Abu Mohammad al-Golani of the al-Nusra Front said in the recording posted on YouTube. "On top of that we will prepare a thousand rockets that will be fired on their towns in revenge for the Damascus Ghouta massacre."

The Syrian opposition has accused government forces of an attack on insurgent-held suburbs of the capital last week where poison gas appears to have killed hundreds of people.

"To the bereaved mothers of the children and the people of Ghouta, I say that your blood is a debt that we and every mujahid (Islamic holy fighter) have to pay," Golani said in the recording entitled, "An eye for an eye".

Nusra's Sunni Muslim fighters have claimed responsibility for the deadliest bombings in the two-and-a-half-year-old Syrian conflict and their brigades have led some of the most successful rebel offensives against Assad's forces.

The group has been formally designated a terrorist organization by the United States, a step which Washington said was vindicated by a declaration in April that it was merging with al Qaeda's Islamic State of Iraq group. Washington now says Nusra is little more than a front for al Qaeda.

I wonder why they are getting all upset if they are the ones who attacked their people in a "false flag" attack in order to make Assad look bad in the first place?

this reminds me of how mass warfare can target civilian soft targets, like carpet bombing in ww#2 Germany

and atomic bombs on japan. this only creates more revengeful acts from the other side later because of this the war/s like this on a mass scale really never end.

Actually, that's exactly wrong. That's the only way wars do end. When a country has been totally beaten to its knees and cannot fight any longer, the war stops. Japan went from being a warlord society to a VERY peaceful country in this way. Korea was fought to a stalemate and that war still isn't ended 63 years later.

In my own country, the civil war ended only when the South surrendered unconditionally after being pounded to death.

In each case of a successful war, the victor totally destroys the infrastructure and annihilates the population, executes all former government members and imposes a draconian occupation, brutally suppressing all uprisings and arresting anyone found with a weapon or saying things against the occupation until a government can be formed by the occupier (not the people....this was the mistake in Iraq) and a new constitution is imposed by the occupier (not the people).

All leadership must be removed unless sanctioned by the occupier. If people look up to even a village elder, those must be removed.

but in the short term your theory looks ok and the piece fits , but in the long term the puzzles picture is chaotic looking, and japan only learn that firepower is king and they are now building there forces back up to counter others like china.in the news today

True, peace doesn't last forever. Still after the occupation is over and the country rules itself (Japan uses the constitution General MacArthur wrote for it), it should have the power to defend itself. We decided that Japan cannot have huge aircraft carriers, battleships and large troop transports anymore and that they have a small air force and tank force to defend themselves only. They no longer have tens of thousands of fighter planes and no bombers. This could change, but it has been this way since 1945.

Since the USA has been waging almost non-sttop wars of aggression for over 200 years, do we need to be treated as Mandrake has prescribed, "totally beaten to its knees"?

Poison gas canisters confiscated from USA/Saudi/Israeli terrorists near Damascus:

"Units of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) have found Saudi-made containers in the countryside of the Syrian capital, Damascus. These Saudi-made containers were used in the production of chemical gases by the foreign-backed terrorist groups, according to the statements of an official from the Syrian military.

In addition, the national Syrian TV channel has already broadcasted the pictures of these Saudi-made containers of materials that have been used by the terrorists to produce chemical gases (sarin nerve gas?) in the region of the capital, Damascus.

The soldiers of the Syrian Army have found these Saudi-made chemical containers in a warehouse of the foreign-backed terrorists in Jobar yesterday. After units of the Syrian Army have encircled an area in Jobar, filled with armed terrorists, on Saturday, the soldiers of the national Syrian army discovered these Saudi-made containers, which were already shown on the Syria TV channel.

The Syrian soldiers further found several chemical agents in tunnels near this location in the north-eastern suburb Jobar, which is near the capital Damascus – according to the pictures and statements by the Syrian TV."
