My local gun club will host a free concealed carry class this Saturday for 400 teachers, two thirds of them women. The county district attorney and county sheriff will lead sessions on legal issues.

Some communities are coming around to the folly that is gun free zones, and I applaud this effort.

    No more Columbines.

I'm all for teachers being able to pack inside the school, but with a few restrictions.
    1. All teachers that want to pack ,must have training . Training that includes how fire arms work, how to clean your firearm, and be able to show proficiency in shooting at the range.
    2. Every teacher that packs, would have to requalifiy every six months,so they can show that they are still proficient with a firearm.
    3. Every teacher that wants to pack, would have to have a very intense background check.

I hope that more of our schools will come up with safe, sensible, programs that will allow more teachers to be able to pack a firearm.

Texas is doing that. Many places are offering free CHL training for teachers. To carry at school, permission of the superintendent is required and many districts are funding week long tactical training for their teachers. Texas passed a law last year to make them "school marshals". It's mostly in remote rural areas, but the program is spreading to urban areas also.

Why do they need guns? What's that saying when we need to have guns in school because the teachers feel like they need them?

Teachers will protect kids for free after the initial training and back ground checks and in greater numbers than the police and you worry about what teachers feel.

Earth to Kranes........It has become obvious that mental illness often manifests while the child is school aged.
I think it's essential that the guns are well concealed, so the kids who would be planning to do rotten things won't know who has the potential to foil their plans.

Mass shooters that are confronted usually end up killing themselves--that was the case with the most recent gunman--when the young female teacher attacked him, he turned his gun on himself. The best way to confront a mass shooter is with a gun. If you want to minimize the impact of mass shootings in schools, armed teachers are the way to go.

Not to mention the knowledge that teachers are (or at least may be) armed might give a potential perp enough pause to not even try in the first place.

Someone steps into a school and starts shooting at kids.

What is the most effective means of stopping them?

I haven't heard of that gun club, I am in southern Colorado. The nearest gun clubs are about an hour away, so we shoot on BLM a lot.

I was at the Southern Colorado 3 Gun at the Pikes Peak Gun Club on Saturday, that was about three hours away. lol

So instead of having them handled by medical experts, a gun is needed? Why not instead try to deal with the issues before pulling the trigger?

Wasn't there a report that the right cheered comissioned by Obama that said that Mass Shootings were incredibly rare?

    - - - Updated - - -

Making sure that they don't have a gun or a reason in the first place to go to school and that they're being cared for.

There is a time for talking, and when some crazed gunman comes down the hall shooting students, that is not the time for talking, except maybe for "Put the gun down!" before pulling the trigger.

Of course they are rare, but if you want to minimize the damage they do, armed teachers is the way to do it.

Klebold and Harris were being well cared for.

All of those things are passive measures that do not stop an active shooter.

    Please address the question:
Someone steps into a school and starts shooting at kids.

What is the most effective means of stopping them?

I am a first responder and participated in an active shooter class last week:

Q: What are schools required to do in the event of an active shooter?
A: Lockdown, huddle in a room with the door locked, lights off, and cowering in the corner in complete silence hoping to god that the shooter does not make it through the door.

Q: What is the shooter makes it through the door:
A: Cower in the corner or throw a book or something.

Q: Are police going to come rushing in to save the day?
A: Nope. The shooter(s) could be anywhere. Entry is high risk and requires a fair amount of training.

Sounds to me that teachers and staff are the first line of defense and should be given the means to protect their students and their own lives and well being. Gun free zones are the targets of mass shooters. Why? Because they have the monopoly of force.

Curing the symptoms isn't preventing another outbreak. If we want to actually deal with the problem something has to be done. A gun in the classroom is simply curing the symptoms. It only can make a situation worse.

That is my solution. Make sure that it never happens in the first place. Find the reasons that leads to shooters going to school. Then there would be no need to have guns in schools.

My answer is find the reasons that cause shooters to go to schools in the first place, not make schools a place where children can't feel safe.

Why teachers? Why not security guards? Someone who is trained and whose job it is to deal with shooters.

I don't know who they are.

What they would need training on is active shooter scenarios and of course, legal obligations along with that.

    - - - Updated - - -

Why do you think a less educated security guard is better than a teacher?
