Today I have been told I should move to Texas to look for a job. Since I have an uncle who lives in Houston, I would go there. Can anyone give me a heads up about Houston? I am a lawyer so I would have to pass the Texas bar before I could find a permanent position. What are my prospects for finding some other sort of position until I pass the bar?
Other than being hot and humid in the summer, I can't tell you much about Houston. Oh- pass on the sushi there.
Your chances for good employment is pretty good. Examine this article: Catch Us If You Can – The Houston metro area continues to set the pace for job growth in the nation, recording a 4.5 percent increase in employment from February ’12 to February ’13, according to data released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). That’s three times the pace of job growth for the nation as a whole and faster than any other major metro. http://www.houston.org/pdf/research/eag.pdf Good luck!!
They got Pappadeaux and cool people and lets face it, its Texas. Lots to do, plenty of opportunities for those who are looking. I envy you.
Don't know about jobs but I can tell you about the houston interstate system. Get ready for a rollercoaster. That is what the interstate system looks like. Literally sections of interstate crossing over and under and around one another. There is an HOV lane that sits way above all other lanes if you want to speed. If your using a gps you might here this. Make a right and then stay to the right, well that might split into 3 streets. It can be very confusing, especially downtown!
Great city. I love it here. I had no idea you were a lawyer, Rook. That's cool. Job market's decent down here as far as I know. It's true the humidity kind of sucks, but you get used to it after awhile. We've got a badass football team and a really exciting up and coming young basketball team. As for the Astros, let's just not even go there. Lots of good places to live, though. And if you've got money (which it sounds like you might if you're a lawyer), there are plenty of sweet-ass lofts all around town. Eventually I hope to move into one, myself, once I start making a little more money. If you like the water, the Seabrook and Kemah area is really nice. A lot of people own boats out there. Oh yeah, and you'll also see plenty of pickup trucks with anti-Obama stickers on the roads. So you should feel pretty at home. Hope to see you out here, man. I think you'd like it. Best of luck. Yer outta yer mind, bro! My ex-girlfriend and I used to eat sushi here twice a week. It's epic. I can give you a list of good places to check out if you want. Not sure where you went.
Only went out twice- totally an off the wall comment based on experiences at two sushi places several years ago- but it was really sub-par. What I was hoping was to see some Gulf fish on the menu- and in neither case there wasn't anything I wouldn't see in New York or San Francisco. Not likely getting back there anytime soon- but if i do, I will give a shout out for recommendations.
Be sure you have an umbrella, it rains a lot. Also, the traffic sucks - so maybe you need to find a job in the suburbs. I wish we could get 1/4 of the rain that Houston gets - oh, did I mention it's close to the gulf, so there are possibilities of Hurricanes? Oh, and the Spurs are better than the Rockets. Good luck.
Your prosects would be good here, you will love the state income tax, none. Houson is hot and humid, takes getting used to, but then again since I live in North Texas I my be a little particular to my piece of Texas. What sort of law do you practice?
I can help you enroll your kids in the second largest certified international school in the US. They will be able to learn how to speak French fluently and get along with like-minded European liberals. The best place to hang out for a drink after work is located in Montrose, the heart of Houston, a pedestrian-friendly neighborhood with lots of cool gays to have a chat with.
Rush hour traffic does suck. No argument there. I avoid all the major freeways during rush hour. And the Spurs are a damn dynasty. I think they've overtaken the Lakers and the Celtics as the most important team in the sport now.
Well, I'm not ready to claim that, we still have to finish off the Grizzlies before we tangle with the Heat or Pacers, and that's not going to be a walk in the park. (I just threw in that comment about the Spurs vs Rockets cause my son lives in Houston and he's such a Rocket fan, even when they're losing.)
Nick and Anthony's Steakhouse. Thats what I remember about Houston the most. Went a few times for work.
Never been there but a friend once said he'd never go back because of it's heat, humidity and skeeters. There's also, from what I understand, been an uptick in crime since the refugees from Katrina settled there from New Orleans. That's all I got.
