That's the law here in Florida. You don't have to wear a helmet but if you don't you must have insurance.

I think I shall count my blessings and make a helmet a religious article of clothing. Not to mention boots and at least a jacket

Glad you are here. Time has a funny way of slowing down when you realize you're on your way down. That was the longest fraction of a second in my entire life.

I'm very fortunate there was grass there to catch me.

Sounds like it hurt. I have had a passenger on my bike once but we never went over 25 on the back roads.

I think I need a good deal more experience before I try that again.

I'll lick my wounds and heal up and learn to live another Day.

Now that we have heard all of the horror stories how many of you still ride?

But damned does my foot hurt and I've got to work on it all night.

I think it was John Wayne that said if you're going to be stupid you got to be tough.

I shouldn't think of myself that way because I know I'm not stupid but I do make dumb choices sometimes.

This one ranks right up there in about the top five

I try to wear my jacket....but even with liner off...its impossible during the hot weather. Same with boots....so hot. I like 50 to 70 degree weather when I can be comfortable and have peace of mind wearing the protection .

    Good choice.

Every time I see a rider with shorts, tshirt and crocs/sandals with just a helmet, I say to myself.... skin doesn't slide so easy on pavement.....

Just got back from going to see where I almost met my maker.

I thought there would be black marks on the pavement because I do remember locking them up. But none to speak of. Someone mowed the very shoulder of the road since then.

I came to a stop about 5 ft to the left of that telephone pole and about 8 or 10 ft in front of that barbed wire fence.

I can see the spot in the grass where I laid it down but if you weren't me you wouldn't even realize anything had happened there.

Quite a peaceful looking place considering that I almost died there. Had I tried to turn much at all I probably would have hit the telephone pole.

I'm amazed I came to a complete stop before the fence. IMG_20220708_182517.jpg IMG_20220708_182502.jpg

Glad you're all right, but please have someone with a LOT of expertise check your front forks and wheel spokes carefully, but you've probably already done that.

I had a total of three motorcycles back when I was riding, and never had a bad accident. I was fortunate, and I always lived by one maxim: "Never assume that YOU, as a motorcycle rider, have the right-of-way". Those damned soccer-moms in SUV's will kill you deader than hell without even meaning to. And then there's all the drunks, etc.

Thank you and the bike is in the shop even now as we speak.

The handlebars were not bent but they are misaligned from the front wheel from where they dug into the grass when I laid it down.

My foot still hurts like hell especially going to work on it every night but I'll be okay.

Glad everything is heading toward getting back to good health, and, for the bike, good restoration to normal.

I never found anything that worked better for most kinds of pain like the one you may have in your foot than ibuprofen!
And, even though for some reason every hospital seems to push acetaminophen ("Tylenol", etc.) for pain, I always avoid it completely, in every product it is an ingredient in, because it can be highly toxic to the liver: https://mygoodgut.com/liver/acetaminophen-toxicity/ . Aspirin, of course, is good for pain, generally, but it can upset your stomach. Everything in moderation! Consider gel-inserts for your shoes? When I had episodes of a painful condition in one foot called "plantar fasciitis", and the gel-inserts helped quite a bit.

"Plantar fasciitis is a disorder of the plantar fascia, which is the connective tissue which supports the arch of the foot. It results in pain in the heel and bottom of the foot that is usually most severe with the first steps of the day or following a period of rest. Wikipedia" Good luck!

So far I haven't taken anything for the pain. I might try to put my boot on it tonight but it still swollen so I'm not sure. So far I've been wearing croc sandals which is what I usually wear.... Which is the reason I injured it because if I would have been wearing a proper boot when I was riding I probably wouldn't be hurting a bit.

I'll try to wear a boot tonight but I'll take my sandals to work just in case I need to take the boot off.

Motorbikes. I'm in my 50's and I have never ever sat on a motorbike, let alone ride one. Due to the possibly of getting seriously Injured or killed, they've never took my fancy.

    Motorcyclist :
Someone willing to strap a tank of flammable liquid on top of an engine and put the entire thing between their legs and ride it.

Motorbikes. Almost as much fun as sex. And it last longer.

My foot is still sore but not as sore as it was and I have an entire range of motion of my toes and foot so if something is broke it's not broke very badly.

One More night of working on it and then I have my weekend. This week has gone pretty fast for limping around on my foot.

I'm not going to ride again until I can put a boot on this foot.

If your wife or girlfriend is mad at you, buy a motorcycle, she'll still be mad at you but you'll have a motorcycle!

I've been in 2 fairly serious crashes, and the helmet has saved my bacon in each case. Gouges and scrapes on the helmets which would have been on my head.

Back in around 2005 I arranged to rent a Gold Wing in Las Vegas. Headed north, planning to visit the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, and then a few more days in Utah, returning the bike to the company in Salt Lake.

Off to a late start in Vegas, made a wrong turn which added more time, finally made it to the North Rim and it was fabulous. Headed north to a Holiday Inn in southern Utah, but the shadows were beginning to lengthen as sunset approached. At some point where the forest came close to the road, a fawn jumped into the bike as I was doing 70. Sounds funny, but I never saw the fawn. I smelled it first, after it had already hit me. Luckily very light traffic, and I came to a rest straddling the center line, bike totaled. Eventually an ambulance showed up. No broken bones but serious contusions. Spent the night in the hospital of a small Utah town, nice hospitality from all the Mormon nurses and such.

It was only a half helmet but it saved the top of my head from serious road rash. At home in Florida I always wear a full face helmet. I was all skinned up, so it was a miserable trip back to Florida out of Vegas.
