Obviously you don't know any evangelicals. Try listening to Pat Robertson some time. And how about congress Rep. Paul Broun(R) Ga. on the science committee, who said the world was literally created in six days, and the big bang and evolution are lies from hell? With dudes like this running this country, is it any wonder it's fuked up? http://www.latimes.com/news/nation/nationnow/la-na-nn-paul-broun-evolution-hell-20121007,0,4628858.story
The Catholic Bible is much better than the Protestant version. It actually includes some useful advice.
In areas with big tradition in scholarship and philosophy the books had to be studied , read between the lines and their real meaning acknowledged because "god" isn't a simpleton and his words have multiple meanings . In the savage northern Europe the cavemen thought "talking snake? god said it so it must be true!"
Oh well. I would suggest you read it more closely.. and realize that the ancient Hebrews had many creation stories.
It's all literal except those things presented as parables or symbolic language. Those laws about garments and wardrobe were meant literally for the ancient Israelites and would be nice now.
The Scopes Monkey trial will probably be overturned by the SCOTUS after they overturn Roe v Wade. No that's not right is it...well right wing anyway.
Very few orthodox Christians considered the Bible "literal" until the Dust Bowl and Great Depression.
The bible thumpers won that trial didn't they. So the SCOTUS can have Darwin taken out of schools, right?
So since evangelicals take the bible so literally, will Mourdock introduce legislation to give gays the death penalty, since in the bible Paul says they deserve to die?
In Romans, that's where Mourdock got his justification for his statement that gays deserve to die. I don't remember the chapter and verse he used, but you can google it if you really want to know.
