Here is just another example of the craziness that this panic (not "pandemic"--although the first three letters are correct) has prompted:

Our housekeeper went, just yesterday, to Sam's Club, here in town. There were only two packages of toilet paper left. They were pushed to the back; so she attempted to move them to the front.

As she was doing so, a shopping cart hit her in the back. Another shopper simply did not want her to get this. (Actually, only one--as that is currently the limit there.)

I have come to the (rather sad) conclusion that civilization is only a thin veneer; that, in previous generations, there was a social fabric that bound us all together--that is missing nowadays.

    What do others think?

Well yes, obviously. The political Left automatically sneers at the very concept of traditions and courtesies and much prefers to substitute for them an 'if it feels good then do it' approach to existence so far as culture goes. Unfortunately this bleeds across society as a whole with increasingly everyone grasping onto an 'everybody for himself!' attitude. This is because it is always easier to tear down a culture and civilization than preserve and nurture it.

@pjohns In mankind, there is always one million possibility, the worst as the best.
The barbarian, the sadist is always somewhere in the "civilized".

Civilizations that saw themselves as flawless were often one step to collapse. The roman empire saw them as flawless, they were eradicated by barbarians, french nobility in the 18th century saw themselves as the best of mankind, they disappeared in the fire of the french revolution. Arrogance is the way of decline. European saw also themselves as the top of morality, we could speak of slavery, colonization or WW2.
The same could be said of muslims and their slave trade, the mutilation of their slaves to produce eunuch.
Japan are a people extremly peacefull in the daily life, they have very few murder, yet during WW2 there were able of a horrible imagination when it came to torturing people.

And we share that, we think ourselves as the top of "progress". On that point, "civilization" is just a thin coat.

I think it's important to keep it in mind however there is also the path of the best.

As Alexander Solzhenitzn said, the line between good and evil runs not between political systems, but in every human heart.

Your posting would be funnier than sh!- if it wasn't so sad. Take the words 'political left' out and replace them with the name of the man you worship 'donald trump' and you would be much more accurate. Hang in there.

I think it's the role of philosophy and religion, that can't be replaced by science, because science state facts, it's doesn't have a morale interpretation of that.
Religion disappeared as an explanation of facts, but also as guidelines, morales.

Describing ourselves as "civilized" is a form of delusional behavior, and there are many examples.

Civilized nations do not have per capita rate of imprisonment numbers around 650/100,000, most of whom are imprisoned for victimless crimes like drugs.

Civilized nations do not enforce sanctions against other nations that harm the innocent persons by denying medical help.

Civilized nations do not institutionalize torture and killing by drone. Civilized nations do not commit military aggression under fraud.

No, of course not. Civilized nations bend over and grab the ankles, submit to the Politically Correct whatever (Left or Right) and fastly become bananarepublics. Wanna example?

I just got done watching our Michigan Governor speak. And what the message basically was is: "You can obey the self-quarantine willingly, OR we'll have to issue the actual order." These are scary times. Not the virus, no. Our government completely and totally has just wiped away our human rights in 96 hours.

I agree. As I saw in a recent article, if the federal govt. can take such extreme measures to fight a run of the mill virus, what will stop a future left wing administration from proclaiming a national emergency to fight climate change!

Every administration grabs more power, it is usually decried by the party not in control and ignored by the party that is.
This time it is being cheered by the party that is in control and ignored by the party that is not.

The future is going to be interesting

There's not a moderate conservative, independent or otherwise who's happy with these developments. There shouldn't even be a Liberal who's happy with these developments, but they are because at least "TRUMP" is gone, or made a puppet.

Never mind this new Soviet Union Stalinist dictatorship that is a BILLION times worse. Trump's gone, that's what's important.

But in this case, the power is being grabbed by state governors and big city mayors, not the federal administration.

We had mandates in ww2 But went away at wars end. Thanks to both dems and repubs.

Let's use the same terms as the curve. The government actions have been escalating, not descalating. What should we look for for the government to start respecting civil rights again?

I know what my political ambitions were in peace time, but I feel like this is not a positive move and so I'm going to put on my Libertarian hat and be conscious of what's happening for the Framers and for this country.

Perhaps it "[c]ould have been worse" for her.

But just how could it be much worse for our country (which prides itself upon--supposedly--being the very apotheosis of civilization?

What "automatically sneers" at our country is the Republicans and the President is our Senators and controllers from the President is to on the VERY DAY a Intelligence briefing, various Republicans immediately sold all of associated Covid-19 stocks a week before the President some of these issues and the stock market started crashing after Trump hinself had been saying "buy more more more" even then!

This is betrayal and avarice at a cosmic scale!

The "dumbing down of society continues ...:bucktooth:" as people continue to support the Republicans!

There are always going to be these panic driven negative events. While some will change, not all of the *******s in society will stop being *******s during this. Their actions tend to ring louder than the positive things, but we shouldn't focus only on those.

I've been impressed with how much kindness I've seen also. Nationally and locally. In a lot of ways, we've been brought closer together through this social isolation thing. People are helping each other. I think this entire situation has the very real capability of teaching us that we are all still people even if we're all choosing sides and vehemently disagreeing over politics and presidents. Whether that lesson would last, as a whole, who knows. But it's something positive to have come out of this.
