RS Audits Few Millionaires But Targeted Many Low-Income Families in FY 2022
    Published Jan 4, 2023

Former President Trump was not alone in having returns he filed while he was President allegedly escape detailed scrutiny by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). While the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act provides the IRS with a large expansion of future funding to beef up audits of the rich, last year IRS revenue agents were only able to audit a small number of millionaire returns. Indeed, during FY 2022, the odds a millionaire was audited by an IRS revenue agent was just 1.1 percent.

During FY 2022, years of budget cuts and increased needs in other sectors left the IRS with only around 1,400 staff-years of revenue agent time to apply to the 165 million income tax 1040 returns that were filed. Even though the IRS applied one-fourth of these hours to auditing millionaires, still barely over 1 out of every 100 millionaires were audited.

    ...
trump had a goal of neutering the IRS and likely so the rich, himself included, would get less audits.

It would appear, Biden is attempting at restoring the neutering and getting more millionaires audited.

The tax code will never be simplified. The rich and powerful want it complicated. And it is those people who have the largest influence on congress.
So, I think it a pipe dream that the tax code will be simplified.

https://news.yahoo.com/irs-tax-audi...he burden of the IRS,to data released by TRAC.

I would go the opposite direction. Simplify and force politicians to act in the taxpayers best interest.
In the end, both elderly sex offenders are only looking to gain/maintain power and control of our money. Neither side can make an honest case that they are looking out for the worker.

I agree that we will never see a simple tax system. They need to keep their hands around our necks so they can continue to spend like thieves with stolen credit cards.

What years did he pay back taxes for? Were those the only years he owed back taxes?

How about if we take those resources and devote them to hiring more border patrol and immigration officials so they can actually take care of a real problem that's being neglected?

Of course that won't happen because this administration is fine with the border situation

    @John Hamilton

Your thread is ill-informed. President Biden agreed to cut the IRS funding, as part of his budget bargain with Kenneth McCarthy, to avoid debt limit problems-- which idiot Republicans in the House are now trying to kill, by not passing the budget that has bi-partisan agreement, including by the Senate, which has passed with big margins, appropriations bills in line with that agreement.

No, still tax and check the lower incomes to prevent backsliding there.
Corporate taxes are a bit more challenging. I personally think they should be a little more limited to encourage growth.
What I would like to see is the rich paying their share which is much harder to do. Aside from their incomes we have them buying things like personal planes that cost more than many neighborhoods that pay property taxes. Or personal ships that cost more than several neighborhoods combined that are paying property taxes every year. It's just odd that we haven't found a way to tax mobile luxury. I also find it odd that the $1 Bud you had while watching the game is luxury taxed but not the
Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon 1992, price at $500,000. Interesting definition of luxury.
    Suggestions anyone?

As to the title of the thread. We've been over this time and again.
Most of the 80,000 is to replace retiring agents over the next decade, some are to develop new technologies and some to go after the scofflaws.
While we're on the silly end of the subject, yes they all receive firearms training, not because they will all carry guns on the job, few will, but because there are a lot of wackos out there. It's still their choice to be armed.

If they have $600 billion left uncollected I wish they'd collect it and use it to pay for the nations expenses.

Many of the new hires will be replacing staff that the IRS has already lost or is expected to lose through attrition in coming years.

Last year, then-IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig told lawmakers that staffing has shrunk to 1970s levels and that the IRS would need to hire 52,000 people over the next six years just to maintain current staffing levels to replace those who retire or otherwise leave.

Hopefully this will help stop and or catch tax cheats like Trump.

Rich people have accountants and tax attorneys. The low income workers are disproportionately targeted for audits. The biggest cheats are the politicians spending our money.

And yet they managed to let Hunter Biden's skate on his failure to pay taxes on $Millions in bribes, by letting the Statute of Limitations run out.

Replacing agents due to retiring or quitting?
Hiring clerks to help process returns faster?

What is so bad about it?
