The main universal language is English. German is kind of a secondary language, but more local just within certain countries.
French also holds a special elevated place but only when France (or Belgium) is involved.

The reason English has become the universal language is due to both the U.K. (Britain) and U.S. (America), which was a major military and economic power having influence in Europe. That and the American entertainment culture that got exported to many of the smaller countries in Europe.

For example, all the way in Finland, 70% of the population can speak English. In Estonia it's 50%. Norway 90%, even though their main everyday language is not English.
About 31% of people in Italy can speak English, whereas only 10% can speak Spanish and 16% French.

Between 40 to 60% of Ukrainians can speak English.

Probably because Ukraine is a smaller country and they are very much trying to look towards the West for trade and economic opportunity.

For comparison, only about 15% of Ukrainians (who speak Ukrainian as their first language) can speak Russian, not counting the additional 19% of Ukrainians who are ethnic Russians and grew up speaking Russian in their home.

‘Chinese’ has a lot of different languages.
For example there is quite a difference between Mandarin (four tones) and Cantonese (nine tones).
