I watched this movie a long time ago, and was so hapoy to find it on Youtube!! Watching it now, more mature and educated in the events depicted it is a fanstastic movie about the real growth of Islam.

I highly recommend watching this. Yes it is 3-hours long, but if you have the time please watch it.

Here are some interesting facts about the movie:

The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, is not shown or heard throughout the movie.

The Saudi Arabian regime actually tried to prevent the movie from being made. It was being filmed in Morocco, and the Saudi regime pressured the Moroccan government to stop Moustapha Akkad from filming in there. It was actually Gaddafi who saved the movie, and allowed Akkad to film the remaining in Libya.

And sadly, Moustapha Akkad and his daughter Rima are dead. They were killed in a suicide bombing in Jordan back in 2005. It truly is such a sad irony....

This is one of the best movies I have found to educate other members on here about some of the history of Islam.

It might be a good movie, but I find it really dated. I think it could be remade a lot better. I'm interested though, if people would be game enough to have someone be Muhammad in the film, ie speaking, seen etc. Obviously a lot of Muslims wouldnt approve, but if the movie was good enough, it could change their minds. Anyway, I think it should be remade.

No doubt it is dated, and a remake would be a great idea (and a good way to honor Akkad).

As for allowing somebody to play Muhammad (pbuh), I doubt this will ever happen. I guess a compromise would be not showing his face, but then again, is that better than the first-person view?

Because we do not know exactly what Muhammad (pbuh) looked like, or how he sounded, as all the pictures depicting him cover his face and there is no recordings of him speaking, it would be hard to depict him in a movie, and the Muslim community would never agree on who should depict him.

I just think this is a good movie to learn about the begining of Islam. If an 18-year old can go through all 3 hours, older people should be able to manage :p

    I have it on DVD...

It's more like a theater play or a monologue than a movie since a for a big part of the film the actor are addressing the camera without any answer coming forth, since they can't have an actor play Mahomet. This is quite silly since that restriction on the image of Mahomet isn't in the Koran and didn't come to be until many years after his death. There are many painting and engraving of Mahomet.

Who cares? We know all we need to know about Islam. Its a murder cult, that is how it was created, how it was spread, and how it is maintained. Wherever there is Islam, there is also misery and injustice, mysogeny and tyranny, degridaion and despair, vengence and violence. That is the Islam we know. That is the Islam that is in the news. That is the Islam that is lived out by those who through misfortune have been born into that evil and vile religion and culture.

Since when making a remake is a tribute/way to honor the original director? Never. Remake is cinema's rape.

+1. Remakes detract from the original, as they try to replace it.

Sometimes they can be good, though. Especially if it's a remake of a movie based on something else, like a book. The movie of 1984 made in 1984 is certainly better than the 1950s film.

I thought the use of the first person thing was quite inventive. I cant see why they cant use that again.

Yeah, but there are a lot of descriptions. But yeah, upsetting that many people would make it really counter productive.

Yes, I agree. When I first watched though I really find it dated and that for me was a draw back. Still a decent film, I just found it didnt age well. I find a similar thing with passion of the Christ, not as bad (but that's probably because its still quite recent). A lot of religious movies have that problem. I think a remake would be a good idea.

Yeah, but I think a remake can be good way to better transfer something to film. So in this case, better dramatize the beginning of Islam.

Hypothetically speaking, if they do make a re-make, I wonder who would play Hamza. Anthony Quinn did a really good job in the original.

Just get a white guy, slap a gray and white beard on his mug, put a large mole between his shoulder blades, and later on dye his hair red. Every once in a while have him look silly, angry, kind, and murderous. A harder role to cast would be that of a six year old bride and show her at nine after Mohammed had sex with her.

If you want to see a current religious movie go see Prometheus. It looks like a sci-fi movie but it's really a religious movie.

There have been a lot of religious movies lately. They might not be marketed as such but they are basically religious stories. Even Battleship was a religious movie because it cast doubt on Genesis 1:28 (NKJV)= Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

I was given the DVD as a gift when I came to Islam. Masha'Allah.
Now thinking of throwing it in tonight. :)

@MegadethFan: No, not even if the movie was 'good enough'. Why would they alienate their main target audience anyhow? :/
@Never Left: Are you a troll or satirical poster?

Yeah that's true. If I was going to make it I'd personally prefer an actor, that's what I'm saying.

    Both.

What Akkad did in the original, the first-person view and instead of Muhammad (peace be upon him) actually speaking, he hands over paper to the companions with Quranic verses could still work in a remake.

And if the idea of a remake is not good, I would love to see a sequel. Kind of the same thing, I know, but it could tell about the history after they conquer Mecca. Keeping with the respects of not showing Muhammad (pbuh).

There aren't very many movies about the history of Islam, and this time we are in now such movies would he very appropriate to counter against the Robert Spencers, Geert Wilders, Pam Gellers and the rest of the haters. Although that shouldn't be the sole reason to make such a movie to counter what they say, they would probably like the publicity of that actually...

Then again, all I am doing is speculating on the idea. What are the odds it will happen?
