Georgia Senate panel ready to subpoena Fulton DA in probe of her conduct in Trump racketeering case

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis said Monday that she will not testify before a Georgia Senate committee investigating her on accusations of misconduct while pursuing a felony racketeering case against former President Donald Trump and his allies.

On Monday, Willis announcing that she will not appear before the special investigative panel was in response to committee Chairman Bill Cowsert, an Athens Republican, stating last week that the Fulton DA would be subpoenaed if she refused to voluntarily testify.

Willis cannot be sanctioned by the Senate committee, but it can issue subpoenas for her to turn over evidence and to testify under oath. Former Gov. Roy Barnes, who declined Willis’ offer to serve as special prosecutor in 2021 in the case against Trump,,

On Monday, Willis questioned whether the special committee had the legal authority to compel her to testify.

“I will not appear before anything that is unlawful and I have not broken the law in any way,” she said during a press conference where she was joined by Black religious leaders endorsing her reelection bid.

These are plays right out of the Trumpian playbook. The judge in the Daniels case may have stifled Trump's efforts to continue smearing everyone in sight, but he has no control over Repub elected officials ability to abuse their authority in service of His Orangeness.

You'll never guess how many congressional Repubs publicly condemned the open attack on the rule of law.

When I began using the acronym POT for Party of Trump I did not imagine the transformation of the former GOP in to a party all consumed with their Dear Leader would be so complete. I've never been so wrong. Members are absolutely all in or they are jettisoned as unfaithful pariahs. It's been horrifying to watch.

 

There is no evidence, none, that Trump has been unjustly charged or is being unjustly prosecuted. Faced with that reality his Repub defenders have decided the best course of action left to them is accuse the prosecutors of being unjust.

It is another way they tug at the fabric of our constitutional republic's system of justice in an attempt to pull it apart in the eyes of the public. A goal not coincidentally shared by the world's autocracies. Especially the man responsible for the slaughter of thousands of human beings in Ukraine.

 

Good to know she thinks she is a above the law. Maybe she is.

They accuse Dems of weaponizing the legal system against Trump even as they weaponize everything at their disposal to protect him.
