There simply is not a large enough sample size to start predicting things based off past events. Lot of people said there was no way Obama could win with unemployment that high. He didn't just win, he dominated. Each election is different... if things don't get any better in the next two years and people are still blaming the Republican obstructionist, then the Dems can keep winning. But no one is going to win because you have established some pattern in the past 40 some elections.

Obama's victory wasn't a landslide.

If you have a room with 100 people in it, and on one side there is 48, and the other there is 52, they still look like about the same amount of people on each side at a casual glance.

The reason Romney lost is because the Obama campaign successfully exploited Romney's failure to get women and minorities on board.

But there is still 48% of American voters who only need to persuade 4% of voters to come into the light.
