I consider myself a history wonk, but I never heard of this before now. Apparently it was true but a young LBJ managed to bury it. Now even the MSM notices. http://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-02-10/historian-reveals-details-on-townsville-mutiny/3821906 Is this related to the Port Chicago Mutiny?
There is another thread that plays up the whole racial issue. The information is very thin so far, based upon the one article cited. Let the truth come out. I am not a big fan of coming to conclusions and then assembling all the facts.
Something not normally practiced on this board. At any rate, I read the article; looks like a case of political expediency to me. I doubt such a story is going to get much traction today; white racists were the norm at the time, so it's nothing new to say the black man was getting poorly treated and getting bad deal. I'm not saying what was happening to them was right--but mutiny in a war zone was pushing things a bit too far. Given the morals of the times, their locale and the overall war situation, I'd say burying the story was probably the best move the government could have made.
