Scientists: Bacteria spreading in warming oceans
Tue Sep 13,`11 Warning: The warming of the world's oceans can cause serious illness and may cost millions of euros (dollars) in health care.

That is the alarm sounded in a paper released online Tuesday on the eve of a two-day conference in Brussels. The 200-page paper is a synthesis of the findings of more than 100 projects funded by the European Union since 1998. It was produced by Project CLAMER, a collaboration of 17 European marine institutes. The paper says the rising temperature of ocean water is causing a proliferation of the Vibrio genus of bacteria, which can cause food poisoning, serious gastroenteritis, septicemia and cholera. "Millions of euros in health costs may result from human consumption of contaminated seafood, ingestion of waterborne pathogens, and, to a lesser degree, though direct occupational or recreational exposure to marine disease," says the paper. "Climatic conditions are playing an increasingly important role in the transmission of these diseases."

The paper also describes a host of other effects of ocean warming, both documented and forecast, including melting ice, rising sea levels, coastal erosion, increased storm intensity and frequency, along with chemical changes in the sea itself, including acidification and deoxygenation. "What was striking to me was the enormous pile of evidence that things are already happening," Katja Philippart, a marine scientist at the Royal Netherlands Institute of Sea Research who was involved in putting the study together, told The Associated Press. "There is so much happening already. We are just in the midst of it."

It is not only the range of changes that has scientists concerned, but the speed of them. "The biggest surprise to me is the fact that things are changing in the ocean much more rapidly than we thought was possible," said Carlo Heip, who is director of the same institute in the Netherlands. In just a few decades, he said, the fish population of the North Sea has changed significantly, with larger species moving toward the arctic and smaller ones taking their place. He said the concentration of Vibrio genus of bacteria has been observed since the 1960s. "When the temperature in the North Sea began to increase at the end of the 80s, the Vibrios began to increase. One of those Vibrios is the cholera species."

In the Baltic region in 2006, far more people got gastroenteritis than usual, Heip said. But he acknowledged that is anecdotal evidence only, and the extent of the danger is unclear. Philippart said some of the effects could even themselves contribute to global warming. The greater acidification of the ocean might mean that algae would be able to capture less carbon dioxide, she said. "Then there will be a further increase in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, leading to greater warming." Project CLAMER is holding a conference in Brussels on Wednesday and Thursday.

5th warmest summer in 132 years...

The heat wasn't just in USA: Hemisphere warmed to the task
15 Sept.`11 - It wasn't just the USA that sizzled to one of its warmest summers ever — the entire Northern Hemisphere also sweltered through its fifth-warmest summer since records began 132 years ago, federal scientists at the National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, N.C., reported Thursday.

This was the 26th consecutive above-average Northern Hemisphere summer, according to the data center. Climatologists define summer as the months of June, July and August. The climate center is a branch of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The unusual warmth also affected the Arctic, where the region's sea ice shriveled to its second-lowest extent on record, the National Snow and Ice Data Center in Boulder, Colo., announced on Thursday. "The minimum ice extent was the second lowest in the satellite record, after 2007, and continues the decadal trend of rapidly decreasing summer sea ice," the center reported in an online report. "This is not just a random event," said James Overland, a NOAA oceanographer, at a teleconference on Thursday. "This is a long-term change in the Arctic climate."

Satellite measurements of Arctic sea ice began in 1979, although partial data goes back at least to the 1930s, according to research scientist Walter Meier of the snow and ice data center. Across the globe, warmer-than-average conditions were recorded this summer in Mexico, the eastern two-thirds of the USA and Canada, along with most of Europe and Asia. Finland had its fourth-warmest summer since records began in the early 1900s, the climate center noted. The warmth across the northern latitudes this summer was caused partly by a lack of Arctic ice, reports climate scientist Jake Crouch of the climate data center. "The open water absorbs more energy from the sun, allowing the land areas to warm," he said.

Also, he said that La Niña, which cools the surface of the eastern Pacific Ocean, tends to cause some land areas to warm, including parts of Asia. Some spots were cooler-than-average this summer, including the U.S. West Coast, Alaska, Great Britain and parts of western Russia. The winter in the Southern Hemisphere was also warmer-than-average, marking the 43rd consecutive above-average winter south of the equator. Federal climate scientists last week announced that the USA experienced its 2nd-warmest summer on record, trailing only 1936.

Fall season no relief for Texas

No relief is in sight this fall for scorched, bone-dry Texas, which just endured its hottest summer on record. In its forecast for the months of October, November and December released Thursday, the Climate Prediction Center in Camp Springs, Md., reported that a continuation of hot, dry weather is expected throughout most of the southern tier of the USA. This is due in part to the return of La Nina, a climate pattern that usually favors dry autumns and winters in the southern USA, according to forecaster Ed O'Lenic of the climate center.

The drought and warmth will continue to exacerbate wildfire condtions in Texas this fall, reports Texas state climatologist John Nielsen-Gammon, who added that it also will affect winter and spring agriculture as well as water supplies across the state next spring. The only part of the USA that should see a rainier fall than usual is the Pacific Northwest, particularly western Oregon and Washington. And the only cooler-than-average spot the next three months is forecast to be southern Florida.

Harmful carbon emissions from burning fossil fuels made their biggest ever annual jump last year, according to the US Department of Energys latest world data released this week. China led the way with a spike of 212 million tonnes of carbon last year over 2009, compared with 59 million tonnes more from the US and 48 million tonnes more from India in the same period. Its big, said Tom Boden, director of the Carbon Dioxide Information Analysis Center Environmental Sciences Division at the departments Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee. Our data go back to 1751, even before the Industrial Revolution. Never before have we seen a 500 million tonne carbon increase in a single year, he said. The 512 million tonne boost amounted to an almost 6 percent rise between 2009 and last year, going from 8.6 billion tonnes to 9.1 billion tonnes.

Large jumps in carbon emissions from burning coal and gas were visible in China, the US and India, the worlds top three polluters, according to the figures that were posted online this week by the Oak Ridge Lab. Significant spikes were also seen in Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Russia, Poland and Kazakhstan. Some countries, like Switzerland, Azerbaijan, Slovakia, Spain, New Zealand and Pakistan, actually showed slight declines from 2009 to last year, but those nations were uncommon. Much of Europe showed a moderate uptick. The pollution measurements could indicate economic recovery from the global recession of 2007-2008, Boden said. At least from an energy consumption standpoint, companies were back to manufacturing levels that rivaled pre-2008 levels and people were traveling again, so emissions from the transportation sector rivaled those of pre-2008, he said.

However, the data also raised concerns about the health of the environment. This is very bad news, said John Abraham, associate professor at the University of St Thomas School of Engineering in Minnesota. These results show that it will be harder to make the tough cuts to emissions if we are to head off a climate crisis. The data are derived from UN statistics gathered from every country in the world about fossil fuel energy stockpiles, imports, exports and production, as well as energy data compiled by oil giant BP. If you know how much of a fuel is consumed and you know the oxidation rate and you know the carbon content of the fuel, you can derive the emission estimate, so it is a pretty straightforward algorithm as far as the calculation, Boden said.

The US team has been calculating the data in the same way over the past two decades, so the hike last year was initially viewed with disbelief by Boden and some of his colleagues, he said. We were a bit shocked. Our first reaction was: Gee, there must be some problems in the underlying energy data. Then, when we actually started to explore other data streams, like the population data, like GDP data, and when we started to look at the actual atmospheric data, all of it paints a consistent picture and we believe it, he said.

I just got my utility bill, 6 cents a KwH. (4 cents in generation costs + 2 cents in delivery).. at typical renewable energy prices(24 cents a kilowatt hour) + higher delivery costs(lets say 5 cents).. we're talking 29 cents a kilowatt hour. Lets go see the truth on the bill:

In the period Sep 21-Oct 20 I used 543 KwH of energy leaving bill(excluding fees taxes,etc) of 22.99.

Now 543 KwH at 24 cents a kilowatt hour is: 130.32!!!!

Now, you think I'm supposed to support that???? Do you think I can afford that kind of rate?? You are NUTS if you think I'm going to support that kind of energy bill! (*)(*)(*)(*) Global Warming, my economic security is more important.

La Nina cooled the globe in 2011
19 Jan.`12 - A strong La Niña lowered the world's temperature last year to its second-coolest reading of the 2000s, federal scientists announced Thursday.

The nations's two primary climate data sets from the National Climatic Data Center and NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) both had the Earth as much warmer than average, but not as warm as recent years have been. The climate center reported that the globe had its 11th-warmest year on record, while NASA marked the year as the 9th warmest on record. Climate records go back to 1880. La Niña is a natural, periodic cooling of tropical Pacific Ocean water that affects weather and climate around the world.

Since 2011 was the second-coolest year of the 2000s, does this mean global warming has slowed? "Global temperature in 2011 was lower than in 1998," NASA climate scientist James Hansen admits in the GISS report. However, he adds that nine of the 10 warmest years on record have occurred in the 21st century, and that 2011 was cooled by a moderately strong La Niña. "We conclude that the slowdown of warming is likely to prove illusory, with more rapid warming appearing over the next few years," Hansen writes.

NCDC calculated the globe's average temperature was 57.9 degrees F, which was 0.9 degrees warmer than the 20th century average of 57 degrees. "There is no long-term cooling trend," said climate scientist Jake Crouch of the NCDC. "If we look at the long-term trend of temperatures for the globe, we see an increasing trend," he says. "However, La Niña can temporarily supress global temperatures." In fact, it was hotter than every year in the 20th century except 1998. When compared to previous La Niña years, the 2011 global surface temperature was the warmest observed. It was the 35th consecutive year that the global temperature was above average, according to the data center. The last below-average year was 1976.

Specifically, 2011 was the warmest year on record in Spain and Norway, and the second-warmest on record for the United Kingdom. NCDC reported the USA's temperature was the 23rd-warmest on record in 2011. What was remarkable for the USA were the precipitation contrasts: Texas had its driest year on record, while seven states Connecticut, Indiana, Kentucky, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, and Pennsylvania had their wettest year on record. The NCDC also upped the number of billion-dollar U.S. weather disasters from 12 to 14, adding Tropical Storm Lee and a severe weather outbreak in the Rockies and Midwest from July to the total.
