I speak for a generation that's said to be derived From making poor decisions like taking medicines prescribed For others, Our mothers tried to protects us from any danger Never see our fathers; they felt just like some strangers So we band together, stay braced, and weather the storm We defy authority and break these cultural norms For a shot at being heard, we're looked upon as a herd Of ignorant individuals who sag our pants and slur our words If given a chance we could really shine and show our worth But they seem content with calling us wild and doomed from birth When really they're the ones who made us, the ones who never raised us The ones who madly point their fingers, but don't try to change us Because it's easier to chant, "The youth's views are askew." Than to sift through all the fiction and burrow through the truth That this problem doesn't get solved by another poor excuse No, you can't just give your two cents and turn into a recluse It's gonna take an armed army of educated adults With premeditated assaults on this generation's faults And accept faults of their own How else are we going to grow? Like a child trying to make a house out of a broken home Don't turn your back on us because this is all we've ever known We come from a place where feelings hide, emotions never shown This isn't a rant, it's a plea to please try to correct the wrong Look within and find the stagnant truth that's been there all along No matter the age-gap, no matter the mishaps We're all just neurons making our way through the crowded synapse We just need to relax, breathe, take a step back and come to terms with the fact that all this judgment's a trap And the only way to escape, the only way to be set free Is to look in the mirror and see what needs to be seen Acknowledge the signs and stop looking for the proof ' Cause the only truth is that what's wrong with "THE YOUTH" - is just youth ' If anybody knows the source or author of this neat little piece of poetry, please post it up, have had it in my possession for quite some time, and do have a use for it if a source can be located. Thanx.........
I couldn't find it with Google; problem is it is probably by a nonprofessional and has not received wide circulation. Here is a link to find poems by theme, although its structure is annoying: http://www.poets.org/poetsorg/poems...ak for a generation that's said to be derived
Thanks, I will review it. Have a student who is superb at OI (Oral Interpretation of literature), in High School speech and debate, strong on the literature phase, weak on the poetry phase of the event. The poem would be an excellent lead-in to strengthen his current poetry performance in the event. He wins, but not as often as he should with his talent. I have never heard anyone perform this poem in competition in 12-years so it would be a true surprise package. However, without an author to attribute "The Youth" poem to, we can't legitimately use it in competition.......thanks for the lead.........Stan
