Canada was a colony of Great Britain in 1812, as stated by the OP. They fought on the side Great Britain.

Trump's remark was funny and it did appear to hit a nerve with Trudeau. In this ever changing geopolitical climate brought on by neoliberalism it's not wise to expect the recent past will also be the future.

The USA wanted to take the colony of Canada from the Brits, and got it's arse kicked again and again. Mr. Madison's war was almost a complete disaster.

If it wasn't for Andrew Jackson the Brits would have established a new colony in the territory gained by the Louisiana Purchase. British Admiral Cochrane took Fort Bowyer which surrendered and would have taken nearby Mobile and a big piece of the Mississippi Territory AFTER the Battle of New Orleans, but he received orders to withdraw.

Other than Andrew Jackson there is no reason to bring up the War of 1812, because it is such a severe embarrassment for the USA.

Most likely the Brits could have taken the USA back as a colony, but they were tired of war, primarily difficult war with Napoleon.

The saddest bit are the Trump Dead Enders trying to justify his statements with a bit of historical revisionism and a lot of pure grade A bullsh!t.

Nonsense. The Brits did not have the military power to force a decision on the Americans who could simply retreat into the hinterlands but the Brits could not follow being tied to the sea. Just as with the American Revolution sooner or later the British people would force their government to come to their senses and stop a hopeless war.

Canada was allied with Britain, therefore they are equally responsible for the actions during the war. The simple reality is that Canada stood against the US, as they still do with their inclusion to the 'commonwealth'. We should consider treating Canada as a hostile nation if they continue to refuse attempts at fair trade...

Impressment was a real issue and grievance for the USA, but with ignorant people running Washington, D.C., and having a very weak military, they were batshat crazy to start a war with England.

When you're a weak country you can't win anything or do anything.

But at least it was a declared war.

The Canadians never deserved to be attacked.

The Mexicans however should have been conquered decades if not centuries ago.

Once again we see how much the schools have failed under liberals. LITERALLY even their talking heads on TV do not know that in 1812 Canadians were BRITISH.

This is just more pure ignorance based hysterical hyperventilating panic attack fake tantrum of the Democratic Party dictated by the MSM propaganda outlets of the global super rich.

Unravelling free trade with Canada is simply reversing a big Reagan mistake in the first place.
