After today's primary in SC its become quite clear.

Cruz did poorly in the heart of the bible belt-not winning a single county.

I have been disappointed in some of his tactics, and likely evangelicals in that region have too.

Rubio did better, and may overtake Cruz elsewhere.

Cruz and Rubio will now slug it out amongst themselves.

And Yeb! dropped out, being slaughtered in "Bush country".

I expect both Rubio and Cruz to get scattered delegates, but the writing is on the wall.

Ben Shapiro (no Trump fan) goes into detail on this here...

It isn't a done deal. But, it is certainly more plausible than it was 2 weeks ago.

Hillary would destroy Trump in the general, so I hope the gets the nom.

Hillary probably has even bigger flaws than Trump in a general, the Dems outsider is losing for one. The fact there are record new Republicans for another. And the fact that we have nearly 8 years of Obama-which gave the GOP its greatest majorities in Congress in over 100 years.

But that would be more appropriate in another thread...as for the GOP field it will likely be Trump, though as Shapiro points out-this is an ugly result from the perspective that neither Cruz, nor Rubio will drop if they are in second place-which means they may stay in till the convention.

better trump than a mainstream republican. we witnessed what a single party federal government is capable of and i don't think anyone but the most deluded among us wants to see that sort of fiasco again. should trump make it to the oval office, at least we can be sure his every idea wont get the sort of rubber stamp treatment we saw in bambam's first years.

Who do you folks think could beat Hillary in the general?

Personally, I don't think Rubio or Cruz or Bush or any of the also-rans could do it.

That's a ways off yet. A lot can happen. We'll see.

There needs to be still more "Trump can't win" messages.

But, wait, wasn't it certain that Trump won't even run?

Sure a lot can happen. Anything is possible, etc.

Personally, based on the current lay of the land, I don't see anyone who could beat Hillary in the general.

But, I think the closest race would be against a Rubio/Kasich ticket.

Hillary has politic experience while Trump has none. He would be no match for Hillary.

Yeah Jeb Bush supporters felt the same thing. Now they have some free time on their hands. Trump will beat Hillary. He is very good at branding his opponents and having that stick even if people do not like Trump. He has no problem being the lesser of two evils.

Did Shapiro count on Romney and his people now getting behind Rubio. What happens when Romney comes out and endorses Rubio? As he won't be with Kasich.

He didn't mention Romney, but I'd expect any bump (if there is one) to go towards Rubio. Romney and Bush always struck me as having the same base, and Rubio is the new face of that group.

A Cruz / Rubio ticket would slaughter anything Hillary could come up with.

Likely you are correct...Unfortunately that means the Party is pretty much dead and we get another Dem for president.

Trump's weakest region is the west and the early states are heavily skewed to the east. OR, WA, and NE aren't until May while CA, MT, NM, and SD have their primary in June.

I think this is largely bravado. Of the trio, I think Trump has the best chance, the only chance of winning and a good (ish) one at that.

There's surely some truth to this. I think one aspect of the season that was played amazingly by Trump was with regard to actual policy. Somehow Trump has escaped the primaries without ever having had to talk about how he intends to do anything. This cycle seems to be proving that conventional wisdom ought to be ignored, but I can't imagine he won't come under heavy policy scrutiny, and when that happens, all bets are off. It's pretty disconcerting to see a person like Trump who has demonstrably and regularly changed his positions at his convenience rise straight through a field of people who at least have some consistency and pedigree. In my opinion, Trump has forced his rivals to meet him in his ring of trash-talking comfort and has yet to venture into the larger ring of general election politics. Again, conventional wisdom has been shown to be woefully inadequate at predicting 2016, but Trump will be in for the fight of his life this year should he gain the nomination because this country will not elect him without elucidation of his vision and its undergirdings.

I personally would vote for Trump, but Clinton over Rubio. I don't want Rubio setting the GOP agenda. He's for a welfare style tax plan and reckless military spending. I will vote for any other GOP nominee over Clinton. I hate Rubio that much.

    Trump understands reality television.

He knew that a broad field of candidates worked to his advantage, as long as he could get the most attention. It quickly became all about Trump's latest outrage, and never about substance (something that Trump competely lacks). As long as Trump was in center stage, the rest of them were just noise, cancelling each other out.

Trump had them outnumbered 1 to 17.

In a one to one matchup, things may be different.
