Well now.....looks like those of us in Chicago will get jacked over identification for Air Travel with Real ID. 5 states and a US territory will have to change over to the Federal Mandated Law. What say ye?

Airline passengers in five states and a U.S. territory will be unable to present their current driver's licenses at airport checkpoints after Jan. 22, 2018, under new rules announced on Friday by the Department of Homeland Security.

The Homeland Security department, which overseas the TSA, said it would begin enforcing a post-Sept. 11 law that directs federal agencies to only accept state-issued identifications that meet federal security standards that were enacted in 2005.

Most states have either adopted the more secure driver's licenses, known as REAL IDs, or have plans to do so later this year. But Minnesota, Illinois, Missouri, New Mexico, Washington state and American Samoa have not moved to make their driver's licenses compliant with the new federal standard, meaning airline passengers from those states will have to present other forms of identification at TSA checkpoints.

Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson said Friday that states will have two years to bring their driver's licenses and identifications up to code before the new mandate takes effect.

"We know that some states must change their laws to comply with the REAL ID Act. That is why we have determined to set the timetable above, and have provided extensions to several states," he said......snip~

Seems like the country is headed towards the direction of a police state.

There were many people not happy about the federal Real ID Act when it was first proposed: http://www.realnightmare.org/about/21/

Real ID is a good law.

or do we want terrorists and illegal aliens on our planes?

Illinois is one of the States where they will have to change law, over it. That burden will passed on to the taxpayer. We pay like 14 bucks for DL, now. How much more do you think they will raise the cost?

That's not to say it isn't a good law.

NY also has to change their license.

why? cause you no longer have to prove you are a Citizen or Permanent Resident to get the license.

you can be an illegal alien or foreigner on a tourist visa, and get a NYS drivers license.

They just used terrorists and illegals as an excuse to fly this law past Conservatives.

They did the same thing with gun control laws too: "We don't want all those bad convicted felons to get their hands on a gun, do we?"

There are other things that could have been done to address these issues, but instead we have a massive government program, collecting detailed information on everyone's movement and putting into place a system of controls and armed checkpoints. You can bet it won't be too much longer until these same laws attempt to control travel on trains and cross-country bus routes.

I used to be able to just show my license, to drive to Canada.

    no more.

why? cause anyone, even an illegal alien, can get a NYS drivers license.

NY isn't the only one. Didn't California and few others decide to give DLs to Illegals?

I agreed with Bush on this one, may as well just have a universal ID, almost everyone has a drivers license anyways and that all ends up in one database

my state charges by the length of your ID--a set amount per year because different licenses are valid for different lengths of time. When we switched, you stopped being able to get your ID at the DMV. You do everything at the DMV but then get mailed the actual ID a few weeks later. I don't recall there being a huge price difference. The mailed to you ID system supposedly saved money and cut down on counterfeits as the technology for new licenses was being swiped faster than it could be distributed. Anyways, when I write a check at big box stores instead of looking at the license and keying in info they just read the strip on the back and it transfers all the info to their computer. Probably not good considering how often Target gets hacked, but what can you do except pay cash and that is sooooo analog.

Well.....they knew they were going to have states with laws that would need to be changed. Illinois, Minnesota, and the others should have plenty of time to have made the change.

Yeah, that's how I have had mine, sent to me for the last decade. In the mail.....Illinois also gives out safety citations. For every 4 years without any moving violations or tickets. Doesn't help with much. Sometimes with cops. I have 20 years without any moving violations or speeding tickets and I use to drive for a living.

I figure once they go to the Real ID.....they will send that info out in the mail.

Terrorist attacks occur- we need more security! How could this happen?!

Trying to prevent terrorist attacks- The government is out to get me!

Frankly, I'm glad they have increased security for IDs. How often do they change currency to help catch fakes? Suck it up, the government isn't out to get you and get the new effing IDs. Problem solved. Why are these states being stupid? As time goes on and criminals get smarter, technology and security need to evolve. Move. On.

First off, no one that is ex Military and Ex Recon is worried about the government, is out to get you. First off they would lose more than half of their mopes that don't know how to shoot and secondly not many are that competent. So save all that BS.

Oh, and it appears all states will be getting the New ID. No later than 2018. So what do they have to suck it up for.

Or we could look at it from the reverse perspective: if universal ID is so concerning then maybe we should also be concerned about how driver's licenses are being used.

It could be said that at least with the current system it is theoretically possible for individuals to opt out of having drivers licenses (albeit they would have to rely on public transportation and hired drivers).

One might imagine there could be a lot of routine checkpoints in the future where everyone will have to have their identification and it will all be input into a giant computer database so everyone's travel can be monitored...

This is why there people who strongly opposed a National ID card.
At least with the States it is decentralized, but now the feds are trying to coordinate together all the States to achieve what is basically the same thing.
