...not quite....its his idea of the old Russian Empire....Putin's always been critical of the old Soviet leaders; he keeps criticizing Lenin he keeps criticizing Stalin criticizing krushev. What he's basically saying is it's my duty to undo the mistakes of the past leaders particularly the Soviet leaders, he's not trying to rebuild the Soviet Union, he's trying to rebuild the Russian Empire - he's trying to recapitulate within the Russian State the Russian lands that he perceives as historically "Russian" and populated by "Russian" people.

indeed...it's a popular narrative isn't it....Putin presenting himself as a strongman who is conciliatory and reasonable...the narrative at the time being that "look we invaded Ukraine and we made some progress and in the spirit of peace we withdrew from Kyiv we were willing to negotiate! But, Boris Johnson scuppered the deal!"
I mean....yes it's all very will rehearsed and indeed sounds very plausible, and in all these anti-establishment left and right circles this is a very popular conversation maintaining that Boris Johnson prevented peace and that Naftal Bennett the Israeli Prime Minister had a peace deal ready to go. Unfortunately it's all rubbish....at the time of the Russian withdrawls from a lot of the lands they occupied the war crimes and atrocities (at Bucha for example) were becoming evident and that in no circumstances was Ukraine society going to countenance dealing with Russians in light of the slaughter of innocent civillians on the scales seen.

So yes it's a great soundbite but unfortunately its not correct.
