1. Russia intends to have all of Ukraine. I did not know that before.
2. Putin is an ethnonationalist, I did not know that before. He loves Russians above all else.
3. Putin believes the Presidency of the United States to be supremely weak an unable to negotiate.
4. Putin is confident that he is going to win. He believes himself to be in a position of strength at the negotiating table.
5. Most importantly, Putin implied that the Western order is no longer hegemonic.

The cause of the war may be more due to Putin's ethno-nationlism and need for a legacy than NATO encroachment. I have always believed that NATO's aggressiveness was the instigator, but Putin downplayed this. That is certainly would be a massive change in my perception. When your enemies speak, it is always best that you listen, you may just learn something.
