Well, not to sound harsh, but too many Americans want "safe spaces" and hold protests because having to take a college mid-term is "damaging" to their psyches and they get "triggered" because someone tells them the unvarnished truth of the world. Too many people want to be coddled through their lives and reject any sense of self-responsibility. Reality inevitably cripples them, and I find their whining and puling highly aggravating.

This country was founded at least partially on the idea that people had the strength of character to own their own lives and to take responsibility for themselves. I'm all about helping someone who is down and needs a hand up, but I have no patience for those who engage in a repeating pattern of behavior. Like we discussed elsewhere, I think treatment services for addiction need to be available for those who want to get help and get over their addictions... but society can only do so much for someone who won't own their actions.

So gun suicides would be sort of like self corrections?

I find the term offensive. That it is somehow correct to die from mental illness

Sorry. Didn't mean to offend. Keep in mind that not all suicides are from mental illness. I will give you "most" but not all.

Then pray tell why should any effort be made to intervene? Mental illness is permanent and can never be cured or otherwise fixed. It is a lifelong affliction that requires constant effort to keep managed. For those afflicted it is more effort than it is worth, which is why so many choose to go off of their medication.

    Not true in all cases.
The clincal categories and classifications of the many mental illness is too vast to make such a wide based statement.

To many among the LW, anyone disagreeing with them is almost by definition, mentally ill.

His idea is that we should not even try to save these people at all in any way. As a doctor I am sure you would disagree

It is not a cost effective endeavor to be engaging in. Considering the overwhelming, insurmountable debt currently plaguing the united states, it needs to look at how to best maximize what resources it has available. Attempting to prolong the existence of those who no longer wish to go on existing is not such an endeavor, but rather a wasteful approach.

Your right. Proliferation of firearms not being one of them ergo you don’t include suicides in talks about gun control because it’s a fascile argument.

And, yet, the violent crime rate has dropped from 458.6 to 372.6 over the same time period. The murder rate has dropped by half a point.

    Easily,
France, Japan, South Korea are all countries that Have higher suicide rates than the USA despite virtually zero legal ownership of firearms.

Simply put that firearms are only one means to suicide.
There are many very effective and inexpensive ways to commit suicide with easy to obtain veterinary meds.
