What could the purpose of these be other than to destabilise the surrounding buildings?

Apparently this tunnel stretched a whole block, underneath dozens of homes and was built from the synagogue to another building down the block underneath a dual carriageway.

Illegal passageway to closed down ritual bath for women. Nothing more.

The synagogue tried to close the passage way, a bunch of nuts tried to stop them.

What "nuts" tried to stop them "closing it"?

Is this internal beef within the community?

And why did they build a tunnel to a women's bath house!?:icon_jawdrop:

I don't think it's beneficial to jump to conclusions based on questionable sources and online rumours. This is exactly the kind of thing that can quickly spin up in to wild fantasies (intentionally or not) regardless of what the actual truth is, something that is unlikely to be apparent in the short term at least.

This is a more rational and considered report of what is and isn't known about the situation; https://www.independent.co.uk/news/ap-facts-brooklyn-jewish-police-b2476666.html

Those "conspiracy theories" stem from mass arrests in the same community a few decades ago of a pedophile ring if I'm not mistaken.

Some young Hasidic Jews tried to stop the Lubavitch organization from sealing off the tunnel, which i believe was ordered by a judge. Lubavitch called the NYPD to stop and arrest the trouble makers, who started destroying the basement level synagogue in protest. It appears this also involves a property dispute. I guess the synagogue felt they owned the ritual bath, court said no, so they moved forward with sealing off the entrance.

So the judge knew about the tunnels and didn't think it was illegal and those responsible for it's construction shouldn't have been arrested previously?

To determine if any illegal activity has taken place prior and if arrests should have been made before the "riots" occurred.

And that looks like baseless speculation.

What evidence do you have of bribery?

Gut instinct? Hunch? Little birdy told ya?

How else has a judge managed to overlook an underground tunnel built underneath dozens of homes? Unless of course it was a "community judge" and not an actual real judge that you're referring to.

I'm not sure what that would have to do with you raising the idea of "destabilising surround buildings".

In general, there is clearly plenty wrong here and I'm certain not defending or supporting any extremist religious communities, but the wild speculation and rumour firing off in all directions can only serve to mask whatever the truth actually is. It is possible there is more child abuse related to this but there is zero evidence supporting that so adding it to the mix now is counter-productive.

I'm not sure what your original comment has to do with my comment that you replied to regarding destabilising buildings. How is that a conspiracy?

So you have no evidence, just wild speculation.

Let us know when you have some evidence for your ideas.

Because you were speculating about the purpose of the tunnel with not evidential basis.

    Update:

    https://apnews.com/article/brooklyn-new-york-synagogue-tunnel-1a4bbcd9b70db83ac2c76927c9ec28d6

"As a result of this extensive investigation, we have issued emergency work orders to stabilize the buildings above the tunnel, vacate orders in parts of the buildings to ensure occupant safety, and enforcement actions against the property owners for the illegal work,” Andrew Rudansky, a spokesperson for the buildings department, said in an email to The Associated Press."

Officials and locals said young men in the community recently built the tunnel in secret. When the group’s leaders tried to seal it off Monday, supporters of the tunnel staged a protest that turned violent as police moved in to make arrests.

A spokesperson for the buildings department said the tunnel did not have approval and permits from the city. City inspectors found dirt, tools and debris inside.

Rabbi Motti Seligson, a spokesperson for Chabad, characterized the tunnel as a rogue act of vandalism committed by a group of misguided young men, and condemned the “extremists who broke through the wall to the synagogue, vandalizing the sanctuary, in an effort to preserve their unauthorized acces"

The ladies bath house is at the other end of union street according to Google maps.
