These statistics come from the UK.

It suggests that the vaccine may not really be extremely effective.

Up to 40 per cent of patients hospitalized with the Omicron variant are unvaccinated, health chiefs have finally revealed in the wake of a transparency row.

Officials were accused of scare-mongering for providing no context in daily updates on how many people have needed medical treatment after testing positive for the ultra-infectious strain.

But the UK Health Security Agency, which replaced the now-defunct Public Health England, has for the first time released extra details offering more clarity on the current state of play.
    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/ar...ccinated-adults-officials-finally-reveal.html

The percentage of the population who have been vaccinated in the UK is close to 90%.

We can do some basic math here, which suggests that the actual vaccine effectiveness rate (at preventing hospitalizations) in this situation is exactly 75%.

The true effectiveness rate might be even lower than that, if we assume there may be another reason that the unvaccinated might be statistically more likely to become infected, say taking fewer precautions, or being part of an immigrant community, for example. (As they say, correlation does not always imply causation)

This is consistent with what I've been claiming before, and what some other studies have suggested, which is that the true effectiveness rate of these vaccines at preventing hospitalizations is probably only around 70%.

So far, more than 51 million people have had a first vaccine dose - some 90% of over-12s. More than 47 million - 82% of over-12s - have had both doses.

    is the exact information.

"Up to 40 per cent of patients hospitalized with the Omicron variant are unvaccinated"

Wouldn't that mean 60 per cent of patients hospitalized with the Omicron variant are vaccinated?

BUT these figures lead the vaccinated to believe they can do whatever the hell they want, spreading the virus. We should be taking steps to limit the spread of the virus instead of encouraging people to go out in masse, spreading the virus everywhere. While the unvaccinated are discriminated against in not being allowed into an 80,000 seat football stadium, 80,000 fully vaccinated people attend the event, spreading it to everyone everywhere, including both the unvaccinated (including many young children) and the vaccinated, where about 20%-30% wind up being hospitalized. We need to quit implying that all of this is the fault of the unvaccinated when they are the main ones spreading the virus because they believe vaccines make them invincible.

90% of adults are vaccinated hence the vaccinated are from a much larger pool of People. And even higher percentage of people over 65 are vaccinated, the age group that represents the majority of hospital admissions

The article below says that 3 doses provide 70% protection against symptomatic infection from Omicron so one should expect that 3 doses would provide
much greater than 75% protection from hospitalization. A study described below gives a result of 88% for 3 doses compared to 52% for 2 doses.
    Only around 34/47 X 82.2% = 59.5% of the population have received 3 doses.

Around 132 million COVID-19 vaccinations administered in the UK in 2021 (news-medical.net)

Recent data published by the UKHSA shows just how important it is to get the jab, with people who haven't been vaccinated being up to eight times more likely to be hospitalized with COVID-19 and the booster vaccine was shown to be 88% effective in preventing people from ending up in hospital due to Omicron.

It marks the end of a monumental year for the NHS, with over 1.6 million people in the UK receiving a booster or third dose in the final week of 2021 - meaning almost 34 million people now have the protection they need from the Omicron variant at the start of the New Year. Around 50 million received a first dose this year and over 47 million received a second of a COVID-19 vaccine. Over 90% of those aged 12 and over have now had their first dose, and 82.4% have had their second.

While two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine provides strong protection against the Delta variant, data from the UK Health Security Agency shows two doses is not enough to protect people from Omicron - but a third dose provides around 70% protection against symptomatic infection from Omicron two to four weeks after the booster is given.

Vaccine Third Dose: Third vaccine dose can boost effectiveness against Omicron to 88%, UK studies show - The Economic Times (indiatimes.com)

A third dose of COVID-19 vaccine can provide up to 88 per cent protection against hospitalization from infection by the Omicron variant of coronavirus, according to early results from studies conducted in the UK. The findings compiled in a report by the UK Health Security Agency (UKSHA) show significantly higher protection provided by third vaccine dose against the highly mutated variant first identified in Botswana and South Africa in November, compared to two doses.

"That's a big boost of protection for 3rd dose vaccine vs hospitalization from Omicron infection. Vaccine effectiveness increased from 52 per cent (due to 2-dose waning after 6 months) to 88 per cent after the 3rd dose"

The UKHSA report cited two studies which examined the association between both variant and vaccination status and risk of hospitalisation.

The first study is based on approximately half a million Omicron cases, and includes all age groups while the second one uses a smaller dataset and is restricted to ages 18 and over.

The first study confirms the previous finding of reduced overall risk of hospitalization for Omicron compared to Delta variant.

A Canadian study recently found a negative correlation with being vaccinated. The unvaccinated were LESS likely to contract Omicron suggesting the vaccines makes people more likely to contract Omicron.

"We also observed negative vaccine effectiveness against OMICRON amongst those that have received two doses compared to unvaccinated individuals."

Not into math, although I did teach it in my profession. But if 40% are unvaccinated then that means 60% were. Hmmmm...amazing.

You just never know who to believe. The hospital staff I saw being interviewed today stated 80-90% were not vaxxed. But of course that was on MSNBC and it was probably a lie. :)

The vax rate in the UK is lower than 90% -- overall population - so you would have to adjust for that in hospitalization death .. 90% doesn't include children. but lets say its 80% rather than 90 .. you are going to come out with say 50% efficiency ..

Now both 70% and 50% are horrible -- not efficient at all .. even if this did apply generally .. but it doesn't. It only applies to the folks with weak immune systems .. not to healthy people. The calculated number has no bearing on them ..

An example of bad statistics used out of context and generalization fallacy this is.

Except that it could be that the 60% are patients admitted for other reasons but testing positive. Some of those are over 80 years old and vaccines are a bit more hit and Miss at that age, some of those are the unfortunates with immune systems that cannot react to the vaccine and some are hospitalised but NOT in ICU

Plus the source is the “daily fail” not exactly a research based journal

Wouldn't the percentage hold true regardless of why the patient was admitted? I mean it's a simple yes or no question. "Have you been vaccinated?"

There are too many variables to use this Stat to ascertain vaccine vaccine effectiveness. The people unvaccinated might be young and healthy where the people who are vaccinated and hospitalized may have health issues or older which motivated them to be vaccinated in the first place.

What I do know...is that vaccinated people and people who previously had Covid are getting omicron....I see that just from my workplace that had a rush of sickness come through.

Again it depends on the viral load you are exposed to. I would suggest you invest in some fans and an open window if possible. Rather watch pigeons cough than get the virus myself

In that case they would have taken massive casualties without the vaccine.

But that doesn't change the percentages of vaxed, unvaxed and if they die in the hospital with Colvid they will be listed as Covid deaths.

They have insane immune systems. I read something at the start of all this about bats & viruses. Remember Hendra virus?

However, it isn't just bats that carry viruses that have lesser or no impact on them. I'm pretty sure Hantavirus doesn't kill rats, malaria doesn't kill mozzies & bubonic plague doesn't kill squirrels. There are dozens more examples. I shake my head that people can be unaware of this.
