I'm no economist, but tariffs are NOT the answer.

The least knowledgeable economic point ever posted on this forum. Sad thing is that Trump knows as much about trade as you.

How much do you know about trade deficits?

Why not? It's just a tax. A lot like other taxes.
    What's your problem with it?

If there is a big Recession, it will be due to the National Debt, not any "trade wars".

Lay the blame where it actually deserves to be blamed.

Americans don't need more cheap stuff from China, they need jobs and industry.

It accomplishes nothing other than increasing the stresses of daily living on the majority of Americans.

So does a sales tax, or income tax, or gas tax.

You really hate Trump, don't you?

Your argument seems to be American consumers are so poor, they can't even afford something made by poor American workers, so they have to rely on some Chinese person being paid $2 an hour, with no environmental regulations in the factory, to make the thing.

They have been working quite well for China for the last 3 decades. Sell all your crap but limit imports. Makes for a nice trade surplus.

No, I don't HATE anyone. But I'm uncomfortable with the kind of man, human being & leader Trump has proven himself to be. I don't like the kind of example he sets for others as the President of the U.S. His personal values are in direct conflict with those I've always held high for this country. And, it has become abundantly clear that Trump makes ALL his political decisions based on what's good for him personally rather than what's good for the nation. He is incapable of separating the two in his own head. Such behavior is the general rule for demagogues, but America is supposed to be protected from demagogues. Trump proves the fallacy of that belief.

Of course they will. They lack any ability to self reflect, and to understand they put the country on this path when they elected the current idiot in chief. What really pains me is that they are apparently to stupid to realize they are voting against their own economic interests. Trump voters are many many many things, but intelligence and introspect are not among them.

    Thats because we automate everything.

Our production has never been higher. And yet we continue to shed employment.

Automation has the ability to eliminate roughly half of ALL jobs in the US in the next 20 years or so.

NO economy can absorb that without some radical re-thinking.

Again, I'm no economist--& have no desire to be. But clearly there's more to your point than you're stating. China can charge high tariffs because China has cheap labor to manufacture everything imaginable. So, internal sourcing is cheaper than importing. China has a strong manufacturing industry. America used to, but lost it during the 1960s thru 1980s. America is now forced to import basic needs. China doesn't have that problem.

Because its being paid by the American Consumer. Not the country of origin.

Exactly! Trump's tariffs are just going to drive up costs for American consumers - oh, and bugger up China's economy which was basically driving world economics with cheap goods after 2008.

What's going to drive the recovery when this next economic cycle turns if we are rapidly trying to destroy global economics with tariffs and sanctions?

    War probably!!!

Oh, so your theory is shot to hell and you deflect to China's cheap labor. Why would China need tariffs to fend off imports if they can do it internally so well as you say?

Do you mean to tell me that with all our 30 million illegals here that they don't work cheap like lefties always say they do? I thought they were great for the economy?

First of all, your statistics are wrong. There are not now, or ever has been 30 million illegals in America. The maximum ever was 12 million, and all of those were not available for the job market. Secondly, until recently, it was Republicans who protected the immigration rights of illegals because they were supporting cheap labor for the farmers of the American southwest. I believe both Reagan & GW Bush supported immigrant farm workers coming in to work from Mexico without papers. It is quite a remarkable turnabout now for Republicans to be the ones screaming about illegal immigrants. Kinda hypocritical really. I'm a liberal Democrat & I want illegal immigration halted, but in a strictly legal & humane way--not with separating children from parents & incarcerating them for undetermined lengths of time. Obama was far better at defending our borders than Trump has been. Obama had a much better record deporting illegals, and a better record for number of illegals actually entering. Trump is just better at lying & manufacturing misinformation & propaganda than Obama was.

What happens when you become a nation of consumers after sending your jobs to the country you now buy the things you used to produce.

Yeah there's been 12 million since 1980. It has remained exactly the same since then.

In spite of all his nefarious methods, illegal immigration is increasing under Trump, for the first time since 2007. This is proof that Trump's insane extremist policies are inhumane & don't work.

GW Bush gave America the largest, most severe recession since the Great Depression. And, he did it by religiously adhering to the fundamental tenets of the conservative, capitalist economic system, that works its best for the rich & super rich, &/or mega-corporations. The middle & lower classes paid the price for that recession with their pain, while those who actually caused it, laughed all the way to the bank. The 2018 tax cut for the wealthy, combined with the spreading Trump tariffs, coupled with Trump's broken treaties, all magnified by Trump's unpredictability, all combine to erode economic confidence globally. If we get ourselves into another serious recession, voters have Trump to thank.
