Africology professor and renowned Haitian scholar Bellegarde-Smith writes:

The Council on Hemispheric Affairs observes:

In a 2008 US embassy cable, former US Ambassador to Haiti Janet Sanderson emphasizes that:

-Refering to the gains from the 2004 US-backed coup that ousted President Aristide, who was flown into exile to the Central African Republic on a CIA plane. Aristide refered to it as a "modern day kidnapping."

In a 2006 US embassy cable, US policymakers concluded:

Edmond Mulet, Head of Mission of MINUSTAH stated:

These cables demonstrate that Washington sees the poor pro-Fanmi Lavalas majority as “resurgent populist and anti-market economy forces” that “must be stopped.”

In a last-ditch, illegal effort to prevent Aristide from returning to Haiti, President Obama himself called South African President Jacob Zuma to persuade him to keep Aristide there. He also lobbied UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, but to no avail. State Department spokesperson Mark Toner stated that:

That's despite their understanding that Aristide is the only candidate with an approval rating above 50%.
