It will be interesting to see where the United States is a Month from now. Hopefully we don't have to go to EXTREMES! to get control of this Coronavirus here. I think in the end, a lot of us are going to have some serious resentment towards China and them not being forthcoming of how contagious this Virus was and how secretive they were.

I did some napkin math (before today's numbers finished).

The US is around 320 cases per million and the EU is around 500 cases per million. To be clear though, the EU saw their outbreak/started widespread testing sooner.

Mississippi's governor issued an "essentials only" rule...

...and then defined essentially everyone as "essential."

The doom & gloom crowd is just getting boring in their dire predictions now. Bunch of pansies & pessimist that think everything is the end of days. Well hell at least ya'll don't have to worry about global warming anymore, the C19 gonna kill us all!

So happy that that hag HRC lost, good to have a optimist in office leading the country thru this.

Except the death rate won't be that high. What a utter lack of reason for you to use the death rate we at currently when you know the vast majority of infections are not even know yet when the deaths are.

What irony... In the same breath you predict a lower death rate while telling others the death rate can't be calculated. It could be lower, it could be higher. 1.4 is a conservative number at this time.

Death rate will never be calculated correctly as we will never know the true number of infections.

1.4% is the opposite of a conservative number. It reflects the known deaths divided into the known cases. We have a pretty good handle on the actual number of deaths. We have no handle on the true number of infections. Thus that number is very skewed toward a higher death rate.

I swear some appear to be rooting for a higher death rate, weird.

I always knew we would hit #1 at some point. We're the 3rd most populous nation on Earth and the most "free" of any of the large populous nations by a long shot. It's the double edged sword of our way of life here. Unlike other nations we can't exactly lock down our nation, our government has to "ask" us if we will please adhere to the CDC recommendations of staying at home. Other nations, even European nations, can MAKE you stay home. That doesn't fly in the United States regardless of what's going on. Sure we can close public places and sort of herd folks back to their homes but we are unlikely to deploy armed National Guards to neighborhood street corners to keep folks inside. That sort of thing doesn't bode well in the US and Americans would be damned if the military was locking them down for ANY reason.

It's a sad reality but even in the face of such a crisis I'm not too keen on suspending the US Constitution to combat anything. So the best we can do is ask folks to remain home, close businesses and travel to sort of herd them back home, and hope for the best.

So in a nation with 330 million citizens with an emphasis on personal liberty it's not shocking to imagine that we would have the highest number of cases in the United States. This is what happens when the government has to ASK it's citizens to comply with things instead of MAKING them comply with things as many other nations have done. And in the grand scheme of things that's a balance I'm alright with.

Even if other nations are flat out lying about their numbers (most likely) we will still be ranked pretty high on the totem pole just based on our society here. We have to remember that this WILL END one day and the way we react now can have long standing consequences for the future. We need to be very careful what we citizens allow the government to do during a time of crisis because once we allow something once, even in a time of great crisis, we have allowed it. And there are some liberties in the US that you do not want an asterisk next to going forward.

Freedom is never free, this is one more priced paid in blood for it. I’m vehemently against mandatory lock downs enforced by armed troops, the very mental image of that in America should sicken anyone. I’m sure there are some cowardly weak knees that would endorse it though :(

Only an utter chump would trust China's numbers, and America has the most CONFIRMED cases(which is a completely different matter than ACTUAL cases), because our testing programs are up and running and kicking ass.

Do you think places like Mexico and Zimbabwe are even bothering to count?

False It that were the case, the death rate would be 4.5. Corona Virus case 591,280 Deaths 26,979.
    1.4% is the conservative number.

I swear some people just pull assumptions out of their ass.

We had a lot of time to shut down the border and airports and agressively test, but we didn't.

Can I borrow your Retrospect-O-Scope? I hear it sees in High Def hindsight.

Oh, and can you show me the post you made on this forum back around the beginning of January where you warned us all what was coming? I mean, surely you saw this coming, right? And surely you warned us, right?

Well that is because the death rate is tied to "known number of infections" as well as directly influenced by the number of ICU beds and ventilators.

So vary depending on the numbers tested and availability of ICU beds & ventilators

I thought we should shut down the border and airpoints when I heard about what was going on in Wuhan. I also wanted us to do a lot of testing of everyone who did step out into US soil. I guess I should have posted about it. Now you will never believe me. But at least I wasn't on twitter telling everyone that this virus isn't a problem.

Seems the ventilator issue is being addressed by greedy capitalist and human ingenuity :)

Unless we have some kind of mandatory testing (highly doubtful) then we will never know the infection rate and death rate.

Unless you know the true infection rate you do not know the death rate. It’s basic math, you have to have both to get a accurate number.

So what is the true infection rate?

Of course you do not know, no one does. Most people don’t even know they have it themselves, and never will.

Including yourself and that why the experts are going with a very low percentage already forecasting the spread is much larger than reported. Out of a controlled batch (known infected users and their death rates) the number is much higher. The 1.4% is wishing for the best with all the evidence we have.

last year around a million people died. their bodies were simply considered medical waste and their deaths were applauded as a woman's right to choose. last year around forty-thousand people died. we yawned and enacted more vehicle safety standards that really have little effect on the totals. around five hundred people died last year in chicago alone. we blamed the tools used (firearms), enacted further regulations to keep those tools out of the hands of those who are least likely to misuse them and felt the righteous indignation of the ignorant. less than two hundred people have died this year, many of them already on their way out of this world, and we are losing our minds, practically demanding martial law and cowering in our beds.

does else anyone see a major disconnect here or is it just me?

The major disconnect that I see is the attempt to compare ~2 months worth of data regarding a novel virus with years of data from other causes of death.

You mention that ~200 people have died from Covid-19 this year, which is a) inaccurate because we just had 400 die yesterday and b) ignores the fact that ~1650 of those ~1690 US deaths happened over the course of two weeks.

And the pace of deaths is still accelerating.

We are going to start seeing randomized sampling of large groups of the country to get tested for the virus and to get tested for the antibodies so that we have a better understanding of the true infection rate.

But if you take into account the Iceland study which found that roughly 50% of the positive cases were asymptomatic/unknown to the individual at the time, I think you could conservatively double the total number of confirmed worldwide cases.

That still gives you a mortality rate of around 2.3%

You didn't need to. The site already gives that. And my sister says the grim days are still ahead for USA, as dead toll in May will be gigantic. Sorry for USA.
