    Hello everyone.

I'm new here in this forum. I am a college student doing a paper regarding USA politics.
Im not from the USA so I have a limited knowledge about this.
And im willing to learn more about this field of topic.
I tried googling this and this is just confusing.
Please, please, any help will be much appreciated.

    1) What is Democrat? Liberal? Republican?
    2) Is Libertarian different from Liberal?
    3) Is it true that most atheist are Liberal? Why?
    4) Why do american voters need to register to a certain political party?

I'll try to answer #4 for you. Americans don't have to register for a political party. I'm registered non-partisan for instance, meaning that I have no political party. Candidate selection for a political party requires a citizen to be registered for that party. For instance no Democrat could have voted for Mitt Romney or anyone else in the 2012 Republican primaries. Since I'm registered non-partisan I can't vote in any primaries just general elections.

A friend told me that liberals are democrats. Why? What does that even mean? Thank you.
