Vancouver has a population of 578,000. I came up with an incident rate of about .06%, about 6 people per 10,000, of the population having contracted syphilis, which is a curable disease. I am not sure how on earth that qualifies as an epidemic.
Gallup poll (i've linked to the most recent one too many times to count so please stop it) shows 96.6% of adults are heterosexual and the remainder are something else be it cross dressers (transgender), bisexual, homosexual etc as for the term "epidemic", feel free to take it up with Vancouver health which used the term.
