I think most Canadians would be ok with this idea. Anyone have any idea how much a 5,525 mile wall will cost?
So I worked out the cost. The current fence between Mexico and the US cost 5 million per mile. Canada/US terrain is much tougher in spots such as the Rocky Mountains but if we use the 5 million/mile number the cost would be almost 28 billion. So you'd have a 28 billion dollar wall that could be scaled or tunneled under. In addition to that there'd be the small matter of 4 of the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence River where you can cross with a boat Sounds like a great plan.
How many billions do we dole out every yr for foreign aid? Something's gotta give....and I think the national security of USA should come first.......
ROFL Some folks are just to stupid for words, never mind to be sitting in the Presidents chair. What is wall supposed to do ? Where are all these Canadians fleeing to the US to do hard labor in the US for Peanuts when they can make more collecting welfare (doing nothing) in Canada and get free health care to boot. There is dumb, and then there is dumber. Then there is "You are so stupid that you are an embarrassment to humanity" Scott Walker kind of idiocy.
LOL! Funny........ Nah.... the Canadians are rather sane and peaceful people.... it's those who aren't sane and peaceful and knows the Canadian border is quite open and unsecured that we have to worry about...... Quite a few yrs ago I watched a documentary on the Canadian border that was quite shocking. A lot of it is bordered off by large ROCKS separating the countries. In some areas, Canadian Mounties on horseback, patrolling. Of course, there are check points to enter Canada and you better have every paper they want to see, but seriously, it's easy to enter the states, unseen, from what that documentary showed......
The United States "doles out" about 1 1/2% of its budget on foreign aid. Historically, 25% of that has gone to one country, Isreal. The US was once a major source of international aid, Back in the days of the Marshal Plan. But that was over half a century ago, and the US is now one of the world's misers. The US gives less in foreign aid per capita than Norway. Of course ,the other enduring American myth is that we are an open country for legal immigrants. In fact, the United States is one of the hardest countries in the world to legally immigrate to. But the myth endures in the American psyche schooled in the images of Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. In fact, we slammed the door tight in the 1920's.
Bad move by Walker, if he does not go on to explain that Canada does a good job controlling its borders already, and that Canadians themselves are not trying to cross into the US illegally at levels that cause concern.
Benjamin Franklin "Those who would give up essential liberty for temporary security deserve neither liberty nor security" It was those who had thoughts like the one above that he was referring to. What is this risk of harm from Canada that we are going to spend tens of billions of dollars building a wall and billions more on an annual basis defending that wall ? What is it you want to be secure from ? What is it that you are so scared of that you want to cower under a chair and beg that the government take away your rights and freedoms if only you could have more security ? Security from what ? Is there some big army massing on the Canadian border that the media has not been telling us about ? Is it "terrorism"... all those Canadian terrorists streaming across the border ? Are these somehow more an threat than those of Islam living in the US ? There are way more of Islam in the US than in Canada. What is the "overall" risk of harm from terrorism to a US citizen such that we should take such drastic action at such expenditure ? The fact is that a US citizen has never been safer from acts of terrorism since stats started to be kept in the 70's. The risk of harm from terrorism is 400 times less than the risk of harm from walking ! God forbid you engage in such risky activities as driving a car. If you are really worried about risk of harm/security then it is a far better bang for the buck to build a few overpasses for pedestrians or better yet improving public transport.
Well, people put bars on their windows and walls around their houses in Puerto Rico where just about the whole country is the hood.
Is your wall going to hold water? I am pretty sure once we build the wall across Niagra Falls, Canada will eventually become one very giant hydroelectric plant for us.
Never said I was scared of anything. I had mentioned a documentary I had watched quite a few yrs ago about the Canadian/US border, which was an eye opener.... My problem is whenever it's mentioned that a wall needs to be built to keep out illegals (southern border) the libs start hollering that it's to expensive, we don't have the $...then when this topic came up - same comment.......so I mentioned about the billions we give every yr for foreign aid. Seems like everyone and everything is more important than our national security..... We DO need a southern wall, but a nothern wall? Well, certainly not like we need a southern one..........not yet anyway.
They're not talking about a fence. They are talking about a wall. Turning the USA into a castle is absurd.
If that's the cost for a fence? walker wants a guarded wall?! And since day one of the new tea party members, they wanted costs down, less taxes???? second part of your statement is absolutely correct.
Oh trust me, I know a lot of Canadians who would love this idea. Please proceed Walker. Trust me, we are not wanted in Canada. I visit frequently for hockey tournaments, they think we're insane. I mean, Donald Trump is now a serious contender for the GOP nomination. Who would not think that's crazy? I've been dating a guy from Toronto for the last year. Even if we get married, the hoops I would have to jump through to become an actual Canadian citizen and be able to hold a job are crazy. Canadians, while great people, do NOT want Americans to emigrate. And really, I can't blame them. We've become an absolute joke of a country.
Good, then you agree with my original premise that Walker is a nut job for suggesting a northern wall at least at present. I would hope that my comments on using "Security" as a general justification-often mere platitude were also heard.
United Stupidity Area ... It is really ridiculous this "illegal immigration" hype in the USA. When I see on other side the still existing and day for day done, illegal actions against legal immigrants in the USA, I have no idea why people want to enter this country and to live there? Example? Mexican family (man, woman, kid) living in the USA with license to work etc. she drives without legitimation a car and police captures her, result: She is sent back to Mexico, but her husband and kid can stay. Hello?
If we slammed the door, how come there's 11 million, an increase of 10 million from when Reagan negotiated the compromise deal with Democrats in 1986? If we "slammed" the door, I'm guessing we didn't really slam it all that hard. Just like the Gang of 8 talks that went absolutely NOWHERE because no one wanted to firmly commit to a deal that involved any security measures. I do think that our "legal" immigration system does need to be fixed, and steamrolled. And that might help the problem. One of the graphs I read said it took 7 years to immigrate legally. That's several years too many. Me and CJtheModerate talked about it in the forum post I made, and we came to an agreement on basically a 5-year probation period that would allow assimilation and transition into the country while hopefully weeding out those bad apples(which can come from anywhere and I'm not singling out anybody.)
I have no desire to have such a wall, but such a defensive attitude to... defense... would be a much appreciated change from wasting money on interventionism to wasting money on actually defending the homeland. $5 million a mile seems so completely absurd. What can that amount of money possibly go towards? Gold-plated fencing?
