Wasn't the purpose of closing the economy to flatten the curve?

What is the "peak" though? There's been no plateau demonstrated ANYWHERE in the world. There is, for a time a slowing of deaths/cases, followed by an uptick in said cases. The only place a plateau has been demonstrated(well, "quote" demonstrated) is China, and you can understand why I used the word "quote"(IE: They're lying, badly.)

If a plateau/peak is not definable, much less achievable then it's time for the world to recalculate its goals.

You should keep up with the news, we are beyond it, and most states haven't opened yet but are planning to in a couple weeks.

It's clearly definable, you just need to define how long you need to see falling numbers of new cases before declaring it a definitive peak. There are some technical difficulties around accurate and consistent reporting and false peaks,by luck or as a result of changed policies or behaviours but the core principle is straight forwards.

The chart on this article gives a good overview of various countries. It shows several countries clearly past the peak but also a couple of other possible patterns; https://www.economist.com/graphic-d...ections-have-peaked-in-much-of-the-rich-world

I suspect there is concern about a false peak and sadly politics involved. Not state leadership is going to want to be the first to take major steps only the have it blow up in their face so there is likely to be an over-abundance of caution.

That still doesn't mean the fundamental policy you described in the OP has changed, even if it isn't being implemented as effectively as it could be.

Credit is due to the Swedes/Ireland. If a "peak" is a steady flow, both of those nations achieved it. Meanwhile the UK is in good shape. Meanwhile the US/Italians, etc even with measures continues to see an uneven flow of cases.

False peak? LOL You lefties are so upset that the economy will not crash before the election that you're inventing arguments like "false peak".

Oh shove it! I'm not even American and couldn't give a damn about your mutual partisan political hate. I'm having a rational discussion about facts. If you're not interested in that, don't both replying.

Yes, but liberals and leftists could make more money staying home on unemployment and stimulus, playing X-Box all day than going back to work and earning it.

Looks like your NHS really screwed the pooch. 267 deaths per million population. The US is 144 deaths per million population.

IF PEOPLE GET THE SENSE THAT GOALPOSTS ARE BEING MOVED, IT WILL BE HARD TO GET THEM TO COMPLY WITH ANYTHING:

"Flatten the Curve" was just another way of saying: "Health Services are not overwhelmed."

That was the purpose, that was the social agreement. Try to move the goal posts and the social cohesion is lost. CARES gives you 4 months of an additional $600/wk unemployment, that should take you through August if you want to personally extend your shelter in place.

I just stated facts. What did I say that celebrated anything?

You're not fooling anyone, your abject hatred of the NHS is well documented. It's also entirely off topic on this thread.

Now you are moving the goal posts. I live in the United States, why would I "hate" the NHS? I have in the past pointed out their shortcomings to convince folks why we don't want that system here.
