I read the following article the other day, which is an edited conversation with Alan Abramovitz who wrote a book called "The Disappearing Center: Engaged Citizens, Polarization and American Democracy".

    http://www.usnews.com/opinion/artic...itical-polarization-might-be-good-for-america

I realized that I definitely held the opposite view point, that political polarization in America was bad for the USA (many more negatives than positives). What our nation needs is more RINOs and DINOs rather than less, as they are the natural bridge between the two main Parties that would facilitate and allow more compromise (also known as "getting things done"). Congress can't even properly pass a budget, for @#$%^&* sake.

So what do the other Forum members think, and why? This could be an interesting debate.

They can work together just fine. Look at US foreign policy.

Congress is run by lawyers and largely incompetent lawyers to boot. If you think lawyers getting things done is good for the country you are seriously delusional. To give you a little better understanding of the nature of the problem. Read first the apostles creed. It won't take you a minute. That's the laymens version. Now read the Athanasian Creed. That's the lawyers version. They both essentially make the exact same points.

I am regularly referred to as a RINO by what seems considered a Republican in todays political atmosphere....I have grown to like the term, as it states I am not amongst the extreme right.:wall:

I do believe I made a post some time ago, and perhaps on another forum railing against moderates, independents, centrists, rinos, dinos, and linos. There is a good chance if you're one of these useless fence sitters who spends the majority of your time walking down the center of the highway, that a Mack truck is going to run your worthless arse over.

The aforementioned group of wannabes never had any direction in life; never had a single useful thought or political proposal of their own, probably ended up staying single their entire life while favoring a gender neutral or a transvestite sexual lifestyle and if by chance one of them served in the military--then they're MOS was most likely to have been latrine clean-up specialist.

You would never get any of the aforementioned elected president of the United States, but chances are good that one of them could indeed be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for acting as a surrogate for Obama's foreign policy agenda.

A moderate is just a person who puts their desire to be liked and accepted over their core principles and convictions.

A Democrat is a cockroach. A Republican is an ********.

Nothing good will ever come from those two demonic organizations collaborating with one another.

The difference between a moderate and the base is a moderate says, " I think...." The base simply says " I believe.... "

Jeff that is the first useful thing you've posted I almost laughed.

What the average moderate thinks is what some PC idiot tells him to think or whatever seems popular at the moment. The only thing I can say about most moderates is that they are somewhat better on the whole than populist.

President Eisenhower was a classic RINO. And taking cheap shots at Obama's undeserved Peace Prize is off topic (although reasonably funny). The problem with polarization is not only that not much gets done, but that policy veers between extremes. Would you really want to see the bulk of the Republican agenda enacted at the cost of seeing it reversed and much of the Democratic agenda put in its place 4 or 8 years later, LH?

Well, yeah, anything would be better than this socialist government that is in play at the moment. The time is getting close, i.e. the mid term elections when we all need to pray that the Republicans sweep house; otherwise, our country is doomed.

    What extremes?

There is only one extreme in this country and that is the extreme right of the Republicans.

The Democrats are center-right and there is no left.

American extremes. It will be a frosty day in hell before a sizeable constituency decides to embrace Socialism in the United States of America, despite the rhetoric of the far-right.

We're talking about people traveling a center lane... not clueless individuals wandering in the roadway.

Get a clue yourself; you can get your ass knocked-off on the side of the road too.

Given how the federal government works it is vastly more difficult to undo something than it is to do it in the first place.

That Mr. Joad would be because you tilt so far to the left that everything else seems right.

While that is certainly true it is also true that no real ideas come from the center these days and really never have.

Yep. The Republicans seem hell-bent upon marginalizing themselves.

99% of conservatives I've known have taken orders from talk radio and Fox News about what to think. It's not the "average moderate" who allows himself to be used in such a way.

The rhetoric of the far-right is nothing more then a fear spreading compaign which they've successfully used in the past to scare the American people into their corner.

The RINOs tend to be sane. The current repubs are lunatic ideologues who would cheerfully destroy the USA if it meant they could get their spoiled brat way. This, by the way, is also the opinion of several LITERATE Republicans, who are intelligent enough to realize that anyone who screams SOCIALISM!!!! the way the bozo brigade does wouldn't know socialism if it was wrapped around a proctoscope covered with sandpaper.

I shouldn't complain. The bozos are in the process of destroying the GOP. Hopefully, the replacement conservative party will keep the illiterates and tub-thumpers out, but I doubt it.

I've noticed that too; it's as if they don't know that centrists, moderates and liberals listen to what is formulated and spouted as synchronized Right Wing rhetoric.

Leftists are agents of the Right Wing who purposely frighten people so they'll run to the Right Wingers for protection. Listen to the GOPers' talk-show nannies. Most of the show is "What have the Liberals done now?" Limousine Liberals and Preppy Progressives purposely feed them this material, in a Bad Cop, Good Cop con game by the Conservative monopoly. Then when the blabbers have hooked their cult with this free red meat supplied by their agents, they'll mix in a few pro-Right side orders with their mostly anti-Left main course in order to hook the suckers into the boat.

Right wing America has no clue as to what the rest of the world is like.

I am a long way from being a far leftist.

I am in fact quite conservative and would definitely be considered that were I in most western European countries.
