A weapon can only deter if people know its there.

Since no one knew the weapon was there how was it a deterrent?

    So it wasn't concealed.

You said, "A weapon can only deter if people know its there." That is, on its face, false. It's false because it has not been proven. If you'd like to try to prove it, feel free. Otherwise, it remains false.

Fine, a weapon can only be known to deter if people know its there.

Well considering I was behind a locked door at the time it was about as concealed as it can get.
And note the idea that there might be at least a couple of dozen other people in that room packing heat and you don't know which one's can be a hell of a deterrent.

It's a false statement until proven to be true. This is 7th grade logic.

Here is the unsubstantiated assertion: "a weapon can only be known to deter if people know its there."

This assertion is assumed to be false until it is proven to be true.

Well, that's how argument works. So the assertion that "a weapon can only be known to deter if people know its there." remains unproven, and is therefore false.

Many posters have described how they were being harassed until they showed a gun.

And water is wet. Thanks for clearing that up.
A weapon is concealed until it isn't. If you search “defensive gun usage" you’ll find it happens anywhere from 500k – 3.5 million times annually (in the US). The raw numbers come from the CDC, most recently from a study ordered by President Obama in 2013.

When I was an infant we took a day trip to the mountains and stopped at one of my parents’ favorite spots. During our stay a couple bikers rolled in. Dad could tell they were trouble and loaded wife & kid into the car. During the load up one of the bikers shouted at dad to “hand over summa that slant eyed pu$$y!” Loudmouth wheeled his bike about 4 feet off the back bumper and dismounted. He walked to the driver’s side window and leaned in to find himself looking down the barrel of a .357 - a weapon he didn't know was there until he was looking at it. He and his compadre saddled up and rode off.

25 years later I owned a '65 Plymouth Barracuda. One day I towed it to a building where I was going to work on it. As I pulled onto the property there were a couple guys about my age sharing a crack pipe. I rolled down the window and said “Hate to tell you guys, but this is private property and you’ll need to clear off.” They snarled and cursed. One of them picked up a piece of rebar and both advanced. I let them see my pistol - a weapon they were unaware until they saw it in my hand - and told them to simmer down. Both men split.

In both instances, the guns were concealed until the moment they were deployed. Y'all are arguing angels on the heads of pins; I don't see the point.

Both times do you think they would have even started anything if they knew the weapons were there?

I neither know nor care. I do not have the ability to predict the reactions of people not known to me. But human nature tends to be consistent; it is not unreasonable to assume that most will retreat in the face of a dire threat. An assumption that is borne out by my own experience, and by the Obama CDC study, which includes FBI data stipulating that more than 95% of civilian involved defensive gun usages (DGUs) are resolved peacefully, with no injuries sustained by either party. The numbers I've seen don't delineate DGUs by Americans who carry concealed, and those who carry openly. However, most Americans who carry (excluding law enforcement law enforcement/security personnel, obviously) do so concealed.

Are you suggesting that open carry by civilians is preferable to concealed carry?

You watch too many movies. They are properly called a suppressor and if you are shooting hundreds of rounds at a shooting range they help to protect your hearing. They do not buy any means remotely "silence" a report. They typically knock off 20 or 30 decibels.

They act exactly like a muffler on an internal combustion engine.

If you shoot on your property often it's considered rather courteous to your neighbors to use one

In any state with concealed carry one would be wise to just assume someone might be armed.

What people are carrying is none of your damn business
