The Taiping Rebellion from 1850-1864 was led by the Heavenly Kingdom, the Tai-Pings, a strange mixture of Millenarian Christianity and Confucianism. It killed almost 20 million Chinese, a much, much greater number than our own ACW which it was an exact contemporary of

Were the Taipings the precursor of the feared present day "Christian Taliban",. A jihadist form of Christianity?

Excellent topic for discussion - too bad I have forgotten what I read on the subject.

IIRC the Manchus (considered foreigners by Han Chinese) had a dynasty in China which lasted about 300 years - I believe they were Ching or Xing. These people were looked upon as occupiers and imperialists who took all the wealth for themselves while commoners remained impoverished. As a result a cult of despair came along and they revolted against the occupiers. I do not recall more details except that it was a bloody turn of events which eventually led to a downfall of the foreign imperialist regime and a re-emergence of Han control of China.

Christian type Taliban? Darn good question. But one better answered by more informed readers.
