    Great song.

    My wife and I saw Dave Brubeck and his band play at a small Catholic church outside Richmond, VA shortly before he died and he did a set of religious music and then a jazz set at the end. He was really frail at that point but he still played as good as ever and he told some great stories about his tours around the world, including a gig in Kabul, Afghanistan of all places. I can still remember the strange sensation of sitting in a church watching him play classics like this:

    I'm glad we got the chance to see him before he passed away - it was a really special concert and experience.

    That's a great memory for you and your wife to share. Some things you share are in the moment. Some you carry for a lifetime.

    I was sitting here thinking about my grandmother. She was so into music and taught me so much about life. Growing up she took me to see so many cool things . Memories Ill carry with me for a lifetime. When I was a real little kid, I remember she took me to see Guy Lombardo and his Royal Canadians. I was mesmerized. lol

    The big wooden board on the table teaching little me how to make pasta from scratch. Two fingers for the cavatelli and this playing on the old record player in the livingroom.

    In this case both. It was particularly poignant because it was obvious that Mr. Brubeck was nearing the end of his days, but there he was still doing what he loved.

    Good stuff, Falena. :beer:

    I heard quite a bit of opera around the house when I was a kid, too. My dad was a huge fan of that and classical music.

    I have a friend who is a trained opera singer. Her range is mezzo soprano. Which to me is so warm in tone compared to a soprano range. Her voice is stunningly beautiful.
    When my mom got sick and was dying she asked for three things. Dont show me in a funeral home. Bring me to church and ask her to please sing Ave Maria for me and my family.
    I was sitting next to my brother in church and when I heard the music starting, in my heart and soul I swear everything stopped. I heard her voice and couldnt breath. It was a frozen moment in time.
    The gift of music. All kinds of music that touch you in so many different ways is a thing of beauty. Real beauty.

    Sorry but I never liked his tone. My father thought him brilliant and got very upset with me when I insisted on calling him ‘Old leather lungs Lanza'

    As a pretentious and snotty nosed brat I hated all music other than classical. The first time a light went on in my head there was anything worthwile outside of the classics ( some of which I know hear as crass populist rubbish) was Dave Brubeck’s ‘Take Five’.
    Speaking of Afghanistan of all places here’s an interpretation of Brubeck performed just over the border.

    Here’s an odd one, slow sleezy blues mostly spoken rather than sung.

    An acquired taste, even for lovers of classical music. German lieder (Art Song) is on the top. of my listening list.
    To gain any appreciation of it though it’s necessary to know what they’re singing about. I doubt one in a thousand of you will follow this through but there’s no harm in trying. You can lead a horse to water etc.

    The Erlking
    Who rides so lately through night and wind?
    It's the father with his child;
    He's got the boy in his arm,
    He holds him safely, he keeps him warm.

    "My son, why do you hide your face so anxiously?"
    "Don't you see the Erlking, father?
    The Erlking with crown and coat?"1
    "My son, it's a streak of fog."

    "You lovely child, come, come with me!
    I'll play oh so beautiful games with you;
    There are a couple of colorful flowers near the shore,
    My mother has a couple of golden robes."

    "My father, my father, and don't you hear,
    What the Erlking promises silently?"
    "Be quiet, stay calm, my child;
    The wind rustles through withered leaves."

    "Do you, good boy, want to come with me?
    My daughters shall take care of you nicely;
    My daughters lead the nightly dance,
    And lull and dance and sing you to sleep."

    "My father, my father, and don't you see there
    Erlking's daughters at the gloomy place?"
    "My son, my son, I see it clearly:
    It seems to be the old grey willows."

    "I love you, I'm fascinated by your beautiful form;
    And if you're not willing, I'll have to use force."
    "My father, my father, now he is grabbing me!
    Erlking has hurt me!"

    The father shudders, he rides swiftly,
    He holds the groaning child in his arms,
    Reaches his home with effort and distress;
    The child in his arms was dead.

    • 1.It's not really clear what exactly "Schweif" means in this context. The literal translation would be "tail", but I'd rather say it's about the end of his coat.

    Am Fenster

    Johann Gabriel Seidl

    Ihr lieben Mauern, hold und traut,
    Die ihr mich kühl umschliesst,
    Und silberglänzend nieserschaut,
    Wenn droben Vollmond ist!
    Ihr saht mich einst so traurig da,
    Mein Haupt auf schlaffer Hand, Als
    ich in mir allein mich sah,
    Und Keiner mich verstand.
    Jetzt brach ein ander Licht heran,
    Die Trauerzeit ist um,
    Und Manche zieh’n mit mir die Bahn
    Durch’s Lebensheiligtum.
    Sie raubt der Zufall ewig nie
    Aus meinem treuen Sinn,
    In tiefster Seele trag’ ich sie,
    Da reicht kein Zufall hin.
    Du Mauer wähnst mich trüb wie einst,
    Das ist die stille Freud;
    Wenn du vom Mondlicht widerscheinst,
    Wird mir die Brust so weit.
    An jedem Fenster wähn’ ich dann
    Ein Freundeshaupt, gesenkt,
    Das auch so schaut zum Himmel an,
    Das auch so meiner denkt.

    At the window

    English Translation © Richard Wigmore

    Dear, familiar walls,
    you enclose me within your coolness,
    and gaze down with silvery sheen
    when the full moon shines above.
    Once you saw me here so sad,
    head buried in weary hands,
    looking only within myself,
    understood by no one.
    Now a new light has dawned,
    the time of sadness is past,
    and many join me on my path
    through this sacred life.
    Chance will never steal them
    from my faithful heart;
    I carry them deep in my soul,
    where fate cannot penetrate.
    Wall, you imagine I am as gloomy as I once was:
    that is my silent joy.
    When you reflect the moonlight
    my heart swells.
    Then I imagine I see at every window
    a friendly face, lowered,
    that then gazes heavenwards,
    thinking of me too.

    e Moh Moh ke Dhaage Lyrics Translation | Dum Laga ke Haisha

    Movie: Dum Laga ke Haisha
    Music: Anu Malik
    Lyrics: Varun Grover
    Singer: Papon
    Starring: Ayushmann Khurrana
    Label: Yash Raj Music

    Ye moh moh ke dhaage
    Teri ungliyon se ja uljhe
    Koi Toh Toh na laage
    Kis tarah girah ye suljhe
    Hai rom rom iktaara
    Hai rom rom iktaara
    Jo baadalon mein se guzre

    these threads of attachment,
    have got entangled in your fingers
    I seem to get no clue,
    how to solve open this knot..
    every particle of my body is a musical instrument,
    that passes through the clouds..

    Tu hoga zara paagal, tune mujhko hai chuna
    Kaise tune ankahaa, tune ankahaa sab sunaa
    Tu hoga zara paagal, tune mujhko hai chuna

    you must be a little mad, that you have chosen me..
    how, how did you listen to everything that was unsaid..

    Tu din sa hai, main raat
    Aa na dono mill jaayein shaamon ki tarah

    you are like a day, I am night.
    come let’s meet like they both meet in the evening..

    Yeh moh moh ke dhaage…

    Ki aisa beparwah mann pehle to na tha
    Chitthiyon ko jaise mil gaya
    Jaise ik naya sa pataa
    Ki aisa beparwah mann pehle to na tha

    this heart wasn’t so carefree earlier..
    letters seem to have found
    a new address..
    this heart wasn’t so carefree earlier..

    Khaali raahein, hum aankh moonde jaayein
    Pahunche kahin to bewajah

    on the empty street, I walk with my eyes closed,
    I’ll reach at least somewhere even if for no reason..

    Yey moh moh ke dhaage…
