Trump was elected partly based on this famous one-liner, but he never really explained what he meant by it. He left it to his supporters to interpret it their own way. I've thought about it some, and feel most of his supporters interpret it to mean making America great as a military and/or economic power in the world. But I don't agree. The trash heaps of history are filled with examples of nation states and individual leaders who became militarily powerful and used that power against their neighbors successfully for awhile. But I don't see that as "Great." For me personally, I feel "greatness" comes from doing something to make the world better as a whole for everyone. For me, the U.S. reached "greatness" at least three times in its history. First, when the founding fathers created a new nation based theoretically on the principle that all men (for me, all humans) are created equal, and have inherent value as individuals. Second, when the U.S. led the world in helping former enemies recover from the devastation of World War II without recrimination, using the Marshall Plan. Third, during the 1960's, when the U.S. led humanity from the womb of Earth, our home planet, to mankind's first successful visit to another planetary world, forever (hopefully) opening up a path to a new frontier with infinite opportunities. I'd be interested in reading your thoughts on this thread title question.

    1. "Make America Great Again" is catchier than "Make America Like It Used To Be Again," which doesn't fit on a cap or wife-beater t-shirt.
    2. The target audience knows what it means.

It basically means taking America from a "managed decline" policy that redistributes our wealth around the world, to a "play for real" policy again and putting Americans first.

It is a campaign slogan, an airy platitude designed to generate vague positive emotional associations with the campaign. Idiots of any political stripe are certainly free to try to read more into them than is there in forming political attacks or false characterizations and be -wrong- regardless of what party, where or when.

To me, I have always seen it as more of a renewed call for national pride. The Blame America First crowd has been in full swing for decades, blaming America for Islamic Terrorism, 9/11, world hunger, global warming, black oppression, when a child dies in the African jungle because America didn't provide the necessary aid etc. The list could literally go on for many pages. With Obama being the epitome of this mentality, it makes perfect sense that a renewed call for national pride would resonate with the national consciousness.

And that's your first mistake IMO. Make America Great Again for AMERICANS, it's citizens. Only people with poor esteem hate themselves, and we've got a lot of them....... politically correct, let's not offend anyone and blame ourselves for all the world's problems hand wringers. The election was a statement, we're sick of it.

Rebuild the Middle Class and bring back the industrial complexes. Reform taxes and make it easier for everyone with lower taxes. Get rid of ACA. Rebuild the military. Establish Law and order. Shrink the size of government (except for the military). Withdraw regulations on businesses and allow them to flourish. Rebuild the infrastructure.

Rebuild the inner cities with more police, more education and more community centers that revolve around family. Punish thugs and gang members harshly. Especially those that murder. Establish equality but not inequity of outcome. Stopping giving government money to rich colleges that don't need it. That money could be better spent.

We have the strongest economy of the G8 countries and outspend for our military more than top 11 Countries combined

No doubt we can make the world a better place.................... We just lack the will.....and a President who thinks of others

And you see a problem with that? I don't. Personally I don't GAS about the rest of the world. I care about US (hey a pun, us and the U.S.) Carrying a big stick and speaking softly is who we should be. Believe me, I'm sick of meddling in the rest of the world's affairs militarily or otherwise. You see any great affection globally for the U.S.? I don't.............eff them. If they aren't allies, they are against us. Let them fend for themselves.

What does "Make America Great Again" really mean?

It represents a desire to go back in time to "the good old days" - when neither blacks nor women could vote and the white male was completely unchallenged.

Change scares people, but it can rarely be reversed.
People who believe a con man who promises time travel have to overlook a lot of reality to remain convinced.

For my money, America is Great NOW, better than ever - certainly better than it was 8 years ago, and I have no desire to return to the practices that drove us to the brink of depression.

When parents could beat their children and they liked it! Dammit!!!

When driving drunk was just inconsiderate

When the local factory could poison your water supply with impunity until you're old and dying.

When workers died at a rate of one per million dollar spent - the actual death rate while building the Golden Gate Bridge.

When the cops could beat and kill people with no one to answer to.

But of course what we are really talking about is going back to when white men like me ran everything. It makes me wonder why I'm opposed to that. Oh yes, I have a conscience, a sense of decency, and I believe in the real American dream. That's why.

Well your Bro Brother Clinton had a BIG hand in that. I blame Bush and Greenspan for not nipping it in the bud, but it is what it is. Plenty of blame to go around there. But Oscama was no panacea, and buried us in further debt with a lot of BS programs.

I voted for Perot - don't pin Clinton on me.
Obama did extremely well in spite of an obstructionist GOP.

How about common working people have a chance at home ownership.

    BTW https://www.google.com/#q=how+many+died+building+the+golden+gate+bridge
The construction safety record for the $35 million Golden Gate Bridge was impressive: only 11 construction workers died. (By contrast, 28 laborers died building the neighboring San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, which opened six months prior.)
