    you people should know that

    (1) text editors is word pad, Not pad, etc
    (2) word processor is MS word, word perfect, etc.

I do not like MS word starter,

is there a kind of text editor with the functions - spelling checking, word counting, page counting?

I used to have MS Word which has a somewhat decent spelling and grammar checking function. However, to get the full version, one has to pay for MS Word Office.

As I'm a cheapie, I found away around it by downloading two free word processors - OpenOffice and LibreOffice. Both are excellent programs and provide all the bells and whistles one needs.

There is also another free program called Grammarly. It does a good job of editing tests of 2,500 words or less. The only drawback when you download the free version are the constant emails asking you to upgrade to the Professional (paid) version.

In windows, I have used Ultraedit for years and love it. I don't spend much time in windws anymore though.

Libreoffice is very good, and I use it almost exclusively for word processing, spreadsheets, etc. It will even open and save microsoft office documents, and is free.

I have a solution for the spam. I set the email service for my domain to send {anything}@mydomain.com to me. Then, when I sign up for stuff online, in stores, etc, I use a unique email address just for them. For instance, I might have used 'politicalforum@mydomain.com' when I signed up here. If I start getting lots of spam addressed to that email address, I set up a forward address to forward it back to their support email address. So, any email that is sent by anyone to 'politicalforum@mydomain.com' gets routed to 'support@politicalforum.com'.

Also there is Abiword, it works nice too, and not too large:

I used to use Wordstar, on Dos, then I bought one for windows 3.x, I would sometimes type too fast. Text editors that I know of do not Repaginate after one inserts page brakes (form feed) and then you go back to change things, so that had me thrown.

Check that out, it depends upon what you want.

I like Wordperfect. The newest version allows you to convert to PDF's, save files without metadata, open and edit MS Word docs, and is significantly cheaper than Word.

Why do you need a text editor and not a word processor?

If you want cheap, just get open office.

While I do actually have a secretary, when I write certain reports, correspondence and proposals, I use Microsoft Word 2010. For casual writing, I use AmiPro 97 by Lotus.

    I hate these useless functions,
I have big files, so sometime word starter opens very slow.
OpenOffice and LibreOffice. are not good to deal with large files.

I only need the basic functions of RTF, plus spelling check, page and word counting.

Just how big are your files? I'm currently working on a novel of 157,000 words - with no problem.

Have you tried to save them in rtf. format? Does a big deal about cutting down the size of files.

However, if they contain images .....
