It's been a few years since the word "Woke" made it's way into various forms of media with the kind of frequency that is hard to avoid. I freely admit that, at first, I just registered it's meaning as yet another conservative versus liberal slur. It kind of fit and didn't require much more interpretation to understand the phrase or sentence in which it was used. Now I'm not so sure. I googled "What does woke mean today?" and it started me off with this: Woke (/ˈwoʊk/ WOHK) is an adjective derived from African-American Vernacular English (AAVE) meaning "alert to racial prejudice and discrimination". ....as well as a reference to Wikipedia that suggests that the use of "woke" dates back many decades. Since the word appears to be some kind of slang, I am unsure if this is true or simply some kind of revisionism to give the appearance that it was always here in our vocabulary, we just weren't paying attention. Nothing lends credibility more than a long history. So do a fellow a solid and help me out with a working, current definition of "woke". PS - I'm sure I'll get the usual quantity of snide responses doubting the sincerity of my request, but don't worry, I'll ignore them.
I kind of poked around with this yesterday without trying see it as I would define it but I think we all see our biases. It's going to depend on those though regardless if you see it from right or left.
At the very least, is it limited to race or is it equally applicable to any minority group(i.e religious, gender, etc) ?
"Woke" had the “alert to racial discrimination and prejudice" definition before Black Lives Matter took it over. Since they claimed it for their own, it has become synonymous with “socialist” because BLM is a socialist or communist organization.
It simply means to be aware, wake up. Usually it involves social injustices. Get woke, is slang for get aware of the situation. Pretending like it's partisan is ignorant. Simple as that. Conservatives can get woke to conservative media and see they are being played for instance. Most choose not to, as they have been conditioned to think woke means something it doesn't.
So here we have an exchange from another thread that leads to a response that includes "woke" that doesn't actually translate well, at least according to the definitions proposed in this thread. Comments ?
What did Boabart say? More then likely the term was simply misused. Boabart isn't aware of much more then what conservative media portrays for it base.
In slang terms, it basically means "you get IT," you understood the state of the world and wanna try to be as racially, socially and gender inclusive as possible. Problem is, too many people today have overused the word to try and seem like they're smarter or more inclusive than they actually are, to the point where I personally don't think they have anything meaningful or useful to say if they use it in an unironic manner. Especially older people trying to seem "down" but really they're just extra annoying and I just want them to shut up. . Much like Ron DeSantis.
Delivered a sermon in which some say she alluded to Biden dying. Others say no, it was a misinterpretation of a passage from the bible.
I’m pretty sure woke means “needing attention from other crybabies with nothing to do” but I’m just going off every “woke” thing I’ve ever read.
"Woke" means nothing more and nothing less than what your definition says. However, it's a word not extensively used. So the extreme right took it to demonize whatever position they think people who are fighting against social injustice and racism they don't like. And they don't like ANY of it. And progressives don't push back on it that much because, after all... who cares! People weren't using it anyway.
That would be a good definition consistent with what I wrote above. Because the only thing about "woke" right wingers have heard comes from the mouths of the likes of Tucker Carlson and Sean Hannity... and such. And you can be sure anything THEY say is nonsense. It's extremely rare that progressive use it. It hasn't been in the progressive habitual lexicon for years. Until some fascist pseudo-journalists on Fox and on the radio revived it.
Of course! That's what I said. It's only used by right-wingers nowadays. Which means "every network you listen to." I hadn't heard anybody on the left use it in decades before the right revived it.
I'd be able to pay off the national debt today for every time someone used the "W" word in a serious manner.
It has in fact little or nothing to do with race except that assorted race hustlers of the twenty to thirty age range group suddenly have decided to refight battles that have been over for thirty years. And try make being mentally a human right.
