So the thread concerning older handguns had a link for budget priced firearms. I have though about what my absolute minimum number of neccisary firearms is, and I don't think I go less than five.

I am curious, of the gun guys here, what is the minimum number of necessary firearms, which ones and why? I rank these in relative power/range... ish.

#1. .22LR rifle. I am not terrible attached to any particular design, but I would say a .22 bolt action. I have found the .22 semi-automatics to get a bit finicky after a few hundred rounds (dirty ammo and little energy to overcome grit). Perhaps a threaded barrel for a sound suppressor.

#2. Handgun: M&P9. I like the M&P's because they are ambidextrous, comfortable, and reasonably accurate. I choose 9mm over .45ACP because I enjoy the magazine capacity in a smaller package. The same size that I fit ten .45ACP, I fit seventeen 9mm. In the same space that I fit fourteen .45ACP, I fit twenty seven 9mm. I choose 9mm over .40S&W because .40S&W is just meh. If a 9mm won't do the job, you need a rifle.

#3. Shotgun: Mossberg 590. I have never been to a 3 Gun shoot where someone did not have a problem with their semi-automatic shotgun, so I little little use for one. I am sure they are good semi-automatic shotgun out there, but I am too lazy to screw with it until it decides to work. Either it works or it doesn't. Therefore I lean in the pump action direction, and enjoy shooting the 590 a great deal. The rifle sights are nice and offer a longer sight radius than the 870. And a bayonet lug. Just cuz.

#4. Rifle: AR-15. Modular. Easily made largely ambidextrous. Parts galore. Easy to upgrade. Easy to build. I just like the AR. I can shoot an AK reasonably well.

#5. Long range rifle: .300Winmag. I am not terribly committed to this particular cartridge, it is just what I have. Looking back, a 7mm would have been a better choice due to the slimmer profile and better BC. I would argue for a magnum of some sort as they have a longer range than the 7.62 NATO and propel a heavier bullet that is less susceptible to wind drift/better BC.

Five seems to the minimum to cover my needs.

Absolute minimum would be a 12-gauge pump shotgun. Besides concealed carry, it could do everything else I need a gun for. For a two-gun situation, it would be the 12-gauge and a 9mm (minimum) pistol.

Now, for the minimum for a well-rounded gun collection, I would of course use the earlier two, but also add a .22 rifle and .22 pistol, and a deer-hunting calibered rifle--no .223s, etc. (Ideal would be a .308 or .30-06 bolt action with a scope).

    6 for me.

Have an AR-15 with red dot for short to medium range hunting/ batte rifle.
Have a Savage trophy hunter(30-06) for long range power.
Have 12g tactical shotgun for hunting and home defense.
    Kahr CM 9 for carry.
    .22 pump for hunting
Crossman pellet rifle for quiet low power hunting.

I have numerous others for whatever.

I don't have a specific number, it seems I rarely sell one once I buy it. My collection just keeps growing. They all serve different purposes.

    About 50 for me

but then again I have competed at national levels in

    NSSA skeet
    ATA trap
    ISU skeet
    ISU Trap
    ISU Double Trap
    NSCA clays
    FITASC

    IMHSA
USPSA-limited, Open, Single Stack and Production
Steel-Limited, Open, 22, 22 Rev. and Open Rev.
    Pins

    NRA Small bore
    GSSF indoor league

so if you compete in a lot of events you need lots of firearms
and of course I have to have a rack of AR 15s and AKs just to make a statement against the anti gun ninnies in office!

If I had no choice at all but to only keep one firearm in my house then it would be my plain ol 12 gauge for home defense. It's the only one that I feel I NEED to have for security reasons, the rest of my guns I just enjoy having.

So I guess my bare minimum would be one. So if I ever had to start getting rid of guns for some reason then it would be the pistols that go first, then the rifles, then the shotguns. But I don't ever foresee me getting rid of any of them so it's a moot point.

Right before gov Malloy clamped down on my state I bought a case of 12 guage buckshot and a case of 45 acp. Not plinking ammo, emergency use only. My train of thought was if that wasn't enough to pilfer more ammo and weaponry from Zombies Id be dead anyway.

If a little precision is required I could use on of my comp guns. 6ppc, 6 BR, 30 BR. Any of which is capable of doing Lasic Surgery at 100yds. At 200-300 yds they'll just remove the entire eye.

Have a mini14 but that won't do anything buckshot can't. A featherweight tactical 308 7-08 243 bolt action I built to keep the gov happy,,,mostly ha ha's really. Extra parts laying around might as well build something different.

Coupla 6.5x284's but there's little need for that range in my part of the country.
I could see my 22 LR coming in handy in certain situations but Ya can't handload the things.
45 and 12 guage for defense. At my age Id rather back up a bit and use superior accuracy to my advantage tho.

I like your choices, though I'd tend to gravitate towards Glock or a CZ in the home for a handgun.

Would also throw in a nice 9mm carbine.

Ron, you never told us what you have. BTW have you ever heard the reasons why guns are sometimes better than women?
    Here's # 1
You can trade a 45 for two 22's and no one will care.

Yes it does Ron. Lots of knowledge here. You should take advantage.
Here's #2 - A gun will function the same no matter what time of the month it is.

Ron, if you're going to get back to the OP, you really are going to have make a sensible statement about what you have or at least what you think you should have. As a NYC dweller I'm really curious.

I won't be telling you what type of firearm I own, for the simple fact that you keep asking me, again and again, in multiple threads.

I like CZ, however it is not ambi. I do not care for the Glock as it tends to point up.

I never gave it much thought. I have two shotguns, an old Savage double barreled and a .410 from when I was a kid. The Savage belonged to my grandpa and latter on my dad. I also have a 30.06 and a Rossi .38. Those have been more than enough for me.

It all depends upon what you consider a "gun guy"? In my life I have owned one hand gun, one shotgun, and two rifles. Today I own none but I may or may not buy a rifle in the future, probably a .22 as I find target shooting to be relaxing.

Absolute minimum would be a 22 rifle. You can protect yourself and also acquire small game. Second minimum would be a handgun and a 22 rifle. Third minimum would be a larger caliber rifle and the rest.

I'll cover #5 first. The 300 Winchester Magnum and the 7.62/308 are what can be termed "consistent" in their accuracy. There are simply better cartridges out there. In terms of shootablity the 7mm Remington magnum will offer better ballistics at short to medium ranges. The fact is that the vast majority of people are really going to have significant difficulty hitting anything beyond 400 yards in field conditions. What I think the world is really going to will be the 6.5 cartridges with the 6.5 Creedmoor leading the way in long range shooting. The goal of Hornady was provide off the shelf loads that will give premier accuracy. They've really accomplished this in spades. It will almost certainly supplant the 7.62/308 in the AR 10 platform in the years to come.
