Over the past several years I have observed the political landscape on social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Reddit, and one constant that I observe is that pretty much nobody likes what they perceive to be the "establishment". For conservatives, this takes the form of disliking what they perceive as advocacy for things like open borders and identity politics. For liberals, I've seen it take the form of disliking what they see as an economic system that they perceive as an unequal playing field. Nobody is happy. So I'm asking you to look past your dislikes, and am wondering if there are any features of the current system we have that you actually agree with and wouldn't want to see changed. I will start: I don't believe there is anything fundamentally wrong with fiat money, or central banks in general (at least in principle). This does not seem to be a very popular (or populist) position on the Internet, but it is the prevailing view in the corridors of power in DC. What mainstream/establishment positions do you hold?
Hmmm that's a very good question. I can list all day my disagreements with the "establishment" but I find myself having a harder time coming up with agreements. I don't think your example, about fiat money and central banks is valid because those are not major populist anti-establishment issues. Those are more boutique issues of interest to only a tiny minority.
I support free public education. I want to expand it. I truly don't understand the GOP opposition to free college. We can over time develop a system which greatly expands community college footprints and do it in the community where the student already lives without the need to ship people off to far away universities.
I agree that civilized society requires a minimum degree of enforced order to function, and human prosperity and advancement is dependent on that civilized society and thus on that minimum degree of enforced order. And I think that's the only view I share with 'the establishment'.
I like this OP. It helps us begin to understand where the problems are and how we may achieve some kind of unity. The federal agencies, services and legislation that I do like: 1) The USPS 2) The ACA (although I believe we'll move into a public option within the next few years) 3) FEMA 4) NOAA 5) NASA
