What to take from the Fox/Google Debate

Fox News and Google hosted the latest of the autumn Republican debates. The questions were predictable; the focus was on jobs and the economy with foreign policy and the obligatory abortion question sprinkled in. There was more bickering from the media-anointed front runners Rick Perry and Mitt Romney. The biggest surprise was Fox tweaking its eligibility criteria and allowing Gary Johnson to take part. Heres an analysis of how I think each candidate did:
Mitt Romney:
Overall the former Massachusetts governor had a good night. He was cool, calm and seemed intelligent, maybe even a little cocky with his nice try response when Rick Perry tried to nail him for his infamous flip flopping past. Romney wasnt the best on the stage, but he was up there. He handled himself well, and showed that he is the superior debater when confronted by Perry. He did, however, miss out on truly attacking Perry on Social Security. It seems Romneys is taking the race slowly. His strategy might just work, he has the funds and poll numbers to take his time and wait for the other candidates to fizzle out. The big question is will it work, or will he have to start attackign soon to keep his front-runner status?
Ron Paul:
The Texas congressman took a different approach to the debate last night from his previous two performances. He was a lot less confrontational and aggressive, as opposed the past debates when he eagerly laid into his home state governor Perry. Paul was a lot more somber which led to him looking more as a serious top-tier candidate. He seemed to be more interested in solidifying his status as the clear number 3 in the race than taking bites out of his competitors. He answered the questions well, and I especially liked his answers on jobs and abortion. Paul correctly pointed out this it is not up to the government to create jobs, but to create the environment in which private individuals will lead the recovery. Government destroys jobs, the market creates them, he said. On abortion, I think his answer that it is the moral character of the people, not the law which will solve the problem was pragmatic and well received. All in all, Rep. Paul had a good night which will hopefully see the more mainstream Republican voters give him a good look as their candidate of choice. He definitely is a front runner along with Romney and Perry.
