Religion is simply a way of life that forms the basis of how views the world- and lives accordingly. Islam for Muslims societies, and Liberal Democracies for the West. There really are no differences save for the presence of the supernatural. Christians and Jews have nothing to do with their respective religions. The Enlightenment led to the West ejecting itself from religion. Enlighten me on the last 10 years of the Prophet's life. I never said things were perfect. My argument was that Islam was far more tolerant than the Christian West when it came to followers of a different belief system.

No, because Islam did not need an Enlightenment. Islam itself was the enlightenment that transformed the Arabs from inconsequential tribes in the desert to the intellectual and military rulers of the world. Science had to conform to Islam. That was not the case in the Christian West, where Christianity trumped science. Westerners always readily assume that the history of religion in the West is the same as Islam. The conflict between the West and Islam is between is rather one between God and Godlessness.

1. Bad translation. Forceful or strong is supposed to be in place of "ruthless." No accepted translation has the word "ruthless, " so you probably got the verse from an anti-Islam site. 2. The verse refers tho those disbelievers who wronged and persecuted the Muslims. 3. There are no cases whatsoever in the Hadiths or Qur'an telling the Muslims not to treat non-Muslims with equity.
