We all know how many progressive Democrats hate Donald Trump. What a lot of people don't realize is that Richard Nixon was much disliked also when he was active, from just after World War II until he was forced from office in 1974.
Trump's a good guy. Nixon opened up useful relations with China. HATE is a powerful, evil word. Only folks that aren't loved are capable of hate,
To help some of those who were not around when Nixon was an active politician, here are some anti-Nixon items. Nixon won his race for a California Senate seat in 1950. Part of his campaign including a whispering rumor that his opponent, Helen Ganagan Douglas was "the pink lady." (Closet communist) Commentators liked to call Nixon's administration "The imperial presidency." The United Auto Workers didn't have much use for Nixon during the Watergate scandal. Nor did those who didn't like him when they found out that he had bugged the Whitehouse. And one of the Nixon campaign slogans, "Nixon's the one!" was turned against him. Here's one more from the 1968 campaign.
Oh please! You know people hate Trump here. I just had a debate with a guy who has morphed Trump's face on a portrait of Mussolini for his avatar. The feeling were the same for Richard Nixon in many circles. Even Barry Goldwater described Nixon as "a very bad man."
Hate is wrong. Always. I have more useful hobbies than making hate into a work of art. Nixon never did anything that affected the prosperity or safety of me, my friends or my family. Nothing like Biden is doing by letting in millions of illegals. Nothing like Biden's inflation, wars or fuel prices. Nixon was a sweetheart compared to Biden. And knowing how Trump had no new wars, lower fuel prices, a more secure border, and lower inflation than anything offered by Biden... I'm looking forward to seeing Trump back in the White House.
Joe Biden is a very big pain. Amazing coincidence - Ukraine and Russia got along sometimes very well, sometimes less so but didn't have a war until after Biden arrived and sent over weapons to Kyiv (referred to as 'aid') Lots of things have gone badly wrong that deserve the label with Biden on it saying 'I did that'.
That’s a great response. I think that there were very few who really liked Nixon. He had the respect of some, but loved and revered by many was not in the mix.
There were many who thought the Nixon’s conduct during the Watergate coverup were as dangerous as anything Trump has been accused of doing. I would also remind you of the Nixon enemies list. You might dislike hate, but Nixon didn’t.
The poll is about dislike but then you're putting hate here. I suspect on this forum the most common association with Donald Trump is ridicule.
There was a lot of hate for Nixon the college campuses. His incursion into Cambodia in May 1970 caused a huge reaction. I will guarantee you that “hate for Nixon” was not too strong to describe it.
I had this same thought as well. But I suspect the Left is not going to be anxious to answer the question. Nor would it be easy for most of them to answer the question, since the average Democrat voter today was not alive or were only children when Nixon was President. So they don't really have a point of comparative reference. Maybe some older people who actually remember the Nixon era well could provide their opinion.
I’ll answer for me. I dislike Joe Biden. I am convinced that he has nothing but contempt for American citizens dislike his border policies. Sometimes I think that we need to pass the hat to buy his influence to do something on our behalf. A lot of other entities have bought him out. You can condemn me, but that’s how I feel.
Its hard to compare. The situations were very different. Nixon was a wartime President Nixon and a lot of his support and opposition was initially cast in the shadow of the politics of the Vietnam war before Watergate. In essence Nixon lost a lot more ground and political capital among moderates and independents, that Trump never had in the first place. Trump has always had a more narrow political coalition, but they have been far more devout and steadfast
Yes, that’s true to an extent. Nixon’s landslide victory in 1972 was more of a vote against McGovern than a vote for Nixon. McGovern ran a poorly managed campaign. Picking Eagleton for his running mate threw him off balance and saying that he was 100% behind Eagleton and then he wasn’t made it worse. Then McGovern came up with dumb ideas like paying everyone in the country $1,000 which made him look radical and foolish. Why Nixon thought that breaking into the Democrat national headquarters at the Watergate Hotel was a good idea is beyond me. He pretty much had the election in the bag and was bragging that he’d gotten the Democrats to nominate their weakest candidate.
His border policy is calculating. First, he issued an executive order that has illegals count in determining the number of seats in Congress receives. That way voters can flee California and New York and not lose any seats. Second, the Democrats will get the illegals on many kinds of welfare to buy their votes, when they vote, legally or illegally. Biden probably can’t understand this strategy, given his mental condition, but those who run the Biden administration do.
Sad to say that I don't discount that possibility. I can't find any other explanation for the degree of complacency that this administration has. Not just 'what you do but what you say'...None of the administrations have done a good job but this one really takes the biscuit. There is a systemic issue though, that congress needs to solve about how easy it is for someone to turn up at the border, fill in a piece of paper and get asylum.
Here's an interestring anecdote you might enjoy: G. Gordon Liddy was a major player in the Watergate fiasco. I diod some work with his son Jim. Jim Liddy was a retired Navy Seal when I knew him. He owned a company called LSS (Layered Security Services). His company would try to break into things like nuke power plants, weapon storage areas, strategic oil reserves and such, then analyze weaknesses in their security systems. Jim was a great guy when I knew him.
Don't forget Lyndon Baines Johnson. “Hey, hey LBJ, how many kids did you kill today?" The Off-Broadway play "MacBird" essentially accused LBJ of Kennedy's assassination. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacBird!
